1998 brake lights don't work

Hello, I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 with the 2.7 liter. My brake lights do not work on both sides. I have replaced all the bulbs and the taillight relay and they still do not work. I have a multimeter but not know what to test. Plus the drivers side back up light does not work either. Could this be the taillight pigtails?

Did you replace/inspect the fuse? Do you have a trailer light wiring kit?

Where can I find a pair of taillight pigtails?? I think that is the problem because the sockets look worn out. Or do I have to replace the whole taillight

Check your local auto electric store, Autozone, NAPA, etc. for just the socket and pigtail that you can solder in.

No. Well, the OEM ones from Toyota do not. Can't say for other brands, but I doubt they come with pigtail/harnesses.

You may find the part numbers for what you need here:

These folks may have what you need:

Have you looked at the brake light switch??

It could be stuck in the open position or just worked loose and is out of adjustment.

Try some contact cleaner on your light sockets I have never seen any ever wear out .

I have seen them rust out and be destroyed from abuse .

You should be able to buy the inner tail light housing which is how the later eighties trucks are .

Which will have the pigtail that will plug into the harness.

It will be quite expensive

We are not talking about a lens here.

If you need picture let me know.

Is the brake switch located on top of the brake pedal? Where is it located? Some of the sockets where the bulbs go seem to be broken or worn out. I'll check out the brake switch when I get off work

If you look up at the Brake pedal you will see it.

The switch closes when you move the pedal just opposite of how you think it will work.

I have to look I think i just threw the old inner tail lights out.:jessica:
