autostart alarm on manual trans

isnt really a 4runner specific question, however i am installing it on my 4runner but is it a bad idea or even possible to install a remote start system on a manual tranny 4runner? had one on my 91 auto and loved it.

It's possible. Most of them don't work if your car is in gear, or if the parking brake is not set.

As a MECP certified installer, I will say this- DO NOT DO IT, it is illegal in almost every state, even though it is possible, and not difficult to do.

If you are set on doing it, make sure you have the proper equipment. Some higher end remote starts such as the Compustar P2W9000FM-AS, have Anti-Grind and other manual transmission based safety features to disable starting if the car is not in neutral. Many shops will not install them however, and I cannot recommend or provide a DIY for legal reasons.

just make sure that hook up a rs defeat that will not allow the started to turn over if the vehicle is in gear. i have installed these for customers and on my own vehicles and have never had a serious problem. the new dei rs and alarms all have options for manual transmission vehicles built in. you just just HAVE TO make sure and hook up the fail safe that will only allow your car to start when it is in neutral.

I disagree with the poster that said they are illegal. There are units made now that have every safety feature that will not allow them to start if the car is in gear. When parking the vehicle the night before just set the car up as per instructions and you will have NO problem.
