What's a fair price for new timing belt and new water pump?

I was quoted $1,000.00 for parts and labor by a mechanic that I have worked with for over 5 years. He does great work, but I was taken back by the price quote.

Is it too high?

1995 4runner 3.0
auto transmission
185k miles (No records of when it was replaced)

The price includes new tensioners.

My dealership quoted me $440 for the timing belt and the water pump is right behind it. I think it should be less than $700 for both. Not sure.

Might wanna put a little information on there first
but if it's for a '96 3.4-

I got a quote from the dealership 'cause I was curious-
Timing belt with water pump $540.

Caveat:
This quote didn't include drive belts, hoses, or tensioners.

1k is outrageous. If you have some mechanical ability, its not THAT hard to do yourself..

Id say its ~$300 in toyota parts (about $150 otherwise) and ~4 hrs work (although im not shure what book time is)

would put it at ~ $660

no way i would spend a grand on it

Yeah, the belt and pump is about $150, change the t-stat while you're in there, $10, dunno about the tensioners, $60? I think Toyota specs the labor to be 3.5 hours, so $260 there. So wazzallthat... $480?

I'd say that someone's looking to finance a vacation home.

the idler pullies (both tensioner and upper idler) are expensive from the dealer. I got mine as a set from advance for like $110 for both.

jus had mine done in memphis tn. cost me 540 after taxes for the timing belt, water pump, thermostat and all 3 drive belts. i would call around a few dealers and get some different price quotes. also, i would call the dealer in memphis, have them send you a fax quote and then take it to the dealer. MOST of them honor other dealers prices as the are raping you anyway....
wolfchase toyota..memphis TN

this price was a 3.4...you say you have a 3.0 in the sig so i dont know if theres a difference or not

1,000 is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to much...where are you from?

I will definitely shop around. Thanks for the heads up. This is a great forum!!!

I am in SF bay Area in California. Tons of mechanics, lots of toyota dealerships. So I'm going to make some calls.

I just bought this toy, so I am currently getting a complete tuneup, new wires, flush the engine oil, tranny, and coolant. Im having the mechanic change the fuel filter as well.

Got all of this info from this forum. So BIG THANKS!!!

Do you have any desire to learn about doing this stuff on your own? It's pretty easy to do stuff like oil change, fuel filter, plugs, wires yourself.

Just a thought!

all you can do is save $$$$ by doing the small stuff yourself. the timing belt, wasnt woth the headache to me. had i known or lived close to someone to help me that had done it before, i would jump into it no prob. who knows, maybe you'll fund someone around the forum who lives in the area to give you a hand....

oil, diff, tranny, t-case, fuel/oil filters, brakes and so-oon are things to do yourself. buy the haynes manual or whatever the popular consensus is and get to work. it feels good to DIY and puts money back in your pocket (unless you have all pockets full)

good luck and welcome

you can buy the belt for $40 and the water pump for $190; toyota oem parts. Then it's just a matter of figuring out the labor on top of that.
