Just another oil and filter question
My baby, 2002 Toyota Tacoma V6 TRD 2 wheel drive with 172,000
Since I'm back in the working on trucks mode, I will be doing all of my own oil and filter changes along with all other maintenance. I have the room and the garage space to do it now. I realize NOW that I don't trust anyone with my baby. Strange things have happened after oil changes when someone else did them. So, I doing everything myself
What's everyone's opinion on oil and filter. I don't have a local Toyota dealer in town, closest one is 50 miles away, not a big deal but not like's it around the corner. I can get genuine toyota oil filters on amazon for cheap 90915-YZZD1
More concerned with the oil, it says to use 5w-30, not a problem But which brand is best?
Lets hear what everyone is using on there trucks.

 

What was put in it before you decided to do it yourself?
I would stick to whatever that is.
Your going to get multiple opinions on what oil to use.
If it matters, I use Shell Rotella 30WT since I have owned my vehicle.

I would go with Genuine Toyota Oil Filters and either the type of oil that is in it now, or your favorite name brand.

Everyone has their opinion as to which brand is best. From the way I see it, the vast majority of oils for sale today are much better than when these trucks are new. Any name brand oil (or well known "house" brand oil) would be just fine.

At this point, it seems that how well you follow the maintenance schedule is much more critical than the brand of oil you use.

I happen to use Toyota branded oil from the dealer as it is good quality oil, is less expensive than most oil at the parts stores, and I already go to the dealer for the filters.

 

I've always asked for castrol gtx I guess that's as good as any
Filters I will buy on amazon around $5 a piece when you buy 5 No dealers in town.............

Motorcraft FL-1A pumping SuperTech 15w-40 with Lucas, I substitute Rotella 15w-40 if it's on sale & I'm in need for some. My trucks probably got 300,000 on the ol'22r , odometer quit @ 249,000 couple years ago so who really knows

Ran this same exact formula on our 2001 Ford Explorer from it's first oil change, when I gave it to a friend it had 255,000 miles ( many of them rough ) & purred like a kitten.

I'm no oil snob & I'm sure some "expert" will say I shouldn't run this formula but you can't argue with results. I do think about adding some zddp occasionally but at this milage what's the point really

Yeah, various opinions on oil type.

I don't trust other with my oil change, either.
1) When I was on Texas on my Route 66 trip, I stopped at a quick oil change place and was told they did not have the proper weight oil for the truck, YET they were gonna do it. So I left, got oil from Wal-mart and and did it myself. I think WM has best local deal on gallon jug of engine oil.
2) Techs at another quick oil change place told me they could not get my old oil filter off because I might have over-tightened it! True story: They do not have the proper tools.

I also like to use OEM filter, because then I'll always have the exact cap wrench for it, instead of having to search for a tool each time I buy after-market filter.

Some filters come with a coating so you can grip it by hand and tighten it, I only use OEM.
