Transmission Issues W56 (rebuild?)

This morning while taking off in 1st gear from a stop light and transmission went pop. It still got me home but it has hard to handle the noise and vibrations. I am pretty sure I sheared a gear. When it not under a load (clutch in or out of gear) the noise and vibration go away. This truck is my baby (2nd owner) and have owned it for 12 years. I called around to get some quotes from some transmission shop but thought they were way out of line with their prices. I checked craigslist within 100 miles and noting. I checked out the marlin crawler web site. They have rebuild kits available but it did not seem like there were gears in the kits. Anybody have the same issues? I am pretty mechanically inclined and have built several Toyota & Chevy engines and also several outboat motors. I have never rebuilt a transmission. Any advice would be great.....

when my w56 transmission went out i searched as well for rebuild kits and shops around the stl. area. Marlin crawler seemed like the best bet price wise but my time frame would not allow it. After several shops and quotes i settled on buying a new one from toyota for 1,800.00. Pricey, but i had the money and needed my truck back on the road since it's my daily driver. It's easy to install and took a day before i was back on the road. Shifts great and never better. Just my 2cents

Its hard to give a price to overhaul a manual transmission. I can give you an IDEA on price, but until we open them we dont know what all is needed. We only replace the parts that are bad, broken, or worn. If you priced it out to replace all parts inside, you might as when buy new from dealer. But price wise your looking at around $650 - $1000. I'm not sure where you live but Im from Maryland. If your local I can help you out. But Used is always an option.
And to answer mightmouse, an overhaul kit for a manual usually only has two options. bearings and seals or bearings and seals with sychros.

I am located outside of Jacksonville, FL. Any special tools besides pullers and a press required?

If your taken it out on the ground (without a lift), the only thing you will need is a jack and some kinda strap to hold the trans to the jack. If your gonna tear the trans apart yourself you'll need snap ring pliers, puller and a press.
