Tranny to transfer leak???
..........I just checked my fluid levels and my tranfer was overfilled by about 1.25 quarts and my tranny was low on oil, is it normal to happen over time?? 88runner/ 5sp with 100,000mi. Any help would be appreciated. What will happen if it persists? Is it bad for the transfer to be to full and how can I fix it myself??? Thanks for your time..............TIM

kind of hard to overfil the tcase, just open your fill plug as any fluid above that level will drain out. make sure you have a container to catch the overflow then reinstall the plug.
check out www.4crawler.com , im sure you will find what you need to know there.

Check for leaks around the tranny and tcase. Previous owner could have filled them by taking off the shifters and pouring in fluid from up top. That would explain the overfilling.
He also could have messed up the seal in between the shifters and the tranny/tcase, and the leak could be coming from there.
Degrese everything good and then re-check for leaks.

Thanks guys....
.....maybe I didn't give enough info but when I got the truck I drained the fluids and replaced with proper levels of Redline according to 4crawler but now- 6 months later the tranny fluid apparently filled the transfer side. So it sounds like I need to replace the seal between the two....... Tahnks again for your time............TIM

Oh. That's odd. I guess it would be possible. There is a seal in between the trans and transfer. Just a round one on the output shaft of the tranny. You could probably just unbolt the t-case from the trans on the truck. There's like 6 or 8 long bolts holding the two together. As long as you can get to them all, you should have no problem. I've separated the 2 before, but off the truck.

Yep, likely a leak at the tranny output shaft seal. Not hard to change except for pulling the t-case back and off. Have done one on a dirt driveway, two people, a floor jack to support the t-case and a jack stand or blocking under the tranny to support it.

.............I was hoping I could leave the tranny on when I did it. Have a new seal on the way from Marlin......... looks like another good Sat in the garage. Thanks again everyone for your input!
