Stripped Head Bolts HELICOIL TIME

My head gasket blew and when i tore into it i found 2 head bolts loose/with washers on them lol. So when i tore it down i found the holes were stripped, bought a helicoil kit, However my question is when retapping the bolt holes,., Would you use/have you used 2 inserts or just a single 1 that is slightly below surface of the head?

I wouldn't trust a helicoil for a headbolt. Your talking alot of ft-lb for it to hold. Have a machine shop fix it. They will most likely fill it and retap for the original headbolt. Or they will use a threaded insert which should not be confused with a helicoil.

No... don't use helicoil for aluminum heads, they expand too much when they heat up, I'd also go the threaded insert route, helicoil actually sells a threaded insert kit, its pretty easy to do, especially with the head off the motor.

Excuse Me but if the threads are stripped all my engines have the threads in the block!!! For Head bolts

Is this something new??

Have I missed something?? I am Always willing to learn.

I think Helicoil has become a term for any thread replacement.

I also don`t think that 65 to 70 foot pounds is a lot of torque

To have a machine shop repair a stripped hole could get more expensive then getting another block used to build.

My $.02..... If you dont spend the $ to do it right the 1st time, it will b more expensive in the long run.... I cant see a machine shop charging all that much to fill a hole and re-tap it.... then again...I rarely need anything done by a machine shop so.....

I have done this on 3406 Cat engine Blocks which are just a little bit more expensive.

I was wondering just how others on here have filled holes.

How much larger then the head bolt size was removed prior to machining a piece to replace it?

How much clearance??

Was Liquid Nitrogen used to shrink the new piece to install in block

Just curious!!

just went through this with my rebuild last year. For me, the 100 bucks for another block was worth the piece of mind to know that the block didn't have stripped headbolt holes...
good luck, and as stated above, do it right the first time

A Update on the motor,, when trying to torque the studs down they ended up stripping out.. Since this was such a budget and I was not employed and needed my truck for some work,, I went ahead and decided to go -2 down.. Yup 8 out of 10. Ive put 3k+ on this engine believe it or not.. Its starting to tick a little more then usual, after Multiple trail trips and hauling plenty of gravel/wood/dirt bikes its time to start thinking about a new motor. My Next crazy Idea is a 300TD (Diesel) Mercedes into the Yota, Im still researching, but Diesel is defiantly preferred. I would consider a 22re To be a pretty damn reliable engine, especially what I've put it thru. However gas is getting crazy spendy and I like the Idea of 250k+.. If only I had proper tools...

Helicoils would have been better than not using 2 head bolts
