stock yota ring gear vs yukonvs chrono'd ?
i know the arguements on having full width 1 ton axles but i have spent alot on my longfield built axles and i love the clearence .. but im in a delema now ..
i have 4 factory yota v-6 4.88 thirds with spun ring gears on my bench in the last year .
i never toast a carrier even being welded just the ring gear i have broke 2 up front and 1 in the rear and one was fault of a stuck drive shaft and punched the pinion into the carrier ..
so question is is the yukon gears tougher than stock yota gears and would be having them chrono'd by longfield be better yet ? anyone test this theory ?

Before you spend monies on new gears...

thats interesting , so there is no upgrade for the stock open diff then in 4.88 ? i would have to change the whole carrier as well then ? i guess it would be a good time to go to a spool ?and try and use a thicker gear set ?

IMHO (as a metallurgist) cryo is snake oil - the science doesn't quite add up. Also, note that if you get them cryo'd for better damage tolerance, they will wear faster under "normal" use.
Your best bet is to go high pinion out of an 80 series Landcruiser as it will be ~30% stronger in front applications due to putting the load on the drive side of the gear instead of the coast side. An Elocker version is available too, but they are BANK.

i have a e locker axle i picked up for my 2000 taco i was going to use it for the front axle on my buggy but walked into a free highpinion diff .. but on my 85 buggy ive been running stock v-6 4.88 ..looks like i would have been better off in the long run still running my stock 4cyl diffs ..
i also have a high pinion diff from a canadian fj . just need some rev cut 4.88 for it .. cant wait .. this will really help my short nasty front driveline angle ..
i will be rebuilding it as soon as i come up with a fix for the rear ..
its weird the places ive broke its never been high traction but slimy mud and snow and it looks like shock load is whats killing em .
