Stick or Automatic?

I have been driving a stick since almost my first vehicle
78 Chevy Blazer
80 CJ-7
86 Z-24
86 Jetta GLI
90 Acura Integra
95 4Runner Ltd.
00 Golf TDI

All but the Blazer were stick. I'm looking for a 02-04 Tacoma and there is a beautiful double cab with cap and TRD off-road package in Syracuse for a good price ($18,995). It's an automatic. Most of my driving will be mixed city/highway with the summers seeing the truck used off pavement at our adventure-ed facility. I am confident that the gears will shift okay on there own, but I don't know if I want an automatic.

Let's hear it from both sides. Advantages and disadvantages.

Thanks.

Stick or Automatic?

I've been driving stick for a very long time (all but one of my 7 vehicles have had a manual transmission.) My 95 4Runner is for sale

BTW I could not find the info...was the double-cab available with a 5-speed?

The double cabs come only in automatic, I searched for quite a while as well until I realized this. If you want the 4 door, you have to go auto. BUt for what its worth, the auto is pretty fast.

My 4runner is a stick. it is great except in heavy traffic. (you know, you drive sticks) My son just bought an Xterra, Automatic. Autos have come a long way over the years. The auto is great for offroad, give it gas and it goes. Downshifting, it holds back great. You can crew up things easier with an auto, stick tends to roll back on obsticials. If I was to buy something now, I would buy an auto.

If you drive in any kind of traffic, get the auto. I do, so that's the only option for me. And it looks like that's the only option you've got, if you're looking at d-cabs.

BTW, plenty of guys here with pretty built off-road rigs w/ auto transmissions.

I'm not even going to bother mentioning that it comes down to what YOU like (as youll see from ALL these threads) because people will argue all day long regardless.

my street car/DD has 3 pedals

my crawler has 2

although I've got a pretty stiff clutch in my subaru, and there are days that my left knee wishes it didn't have to work so hard.

manual all the way, with a truck. Auto Heeps and cars are fine. I had an '87 Cherokee XJ 4.0 (made by AMC, and don't even try to say Chrypissler, becaue I know this for a fact) with an Aisin 4-speed auto and it was AWESOME. The only Heep that can really be called a Jeep is the 1983-1987 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0 and the original Willys-Overland. Other than that they are Heeps of ☺☺☺☺.

Advantages of Manuals:

Battery goes, you can pop start it (somebody in here said this is no longer true, since there's so many electronics nowadays, not sure if this is correct)

Starter goes, you can pop start it.

Better mileage (although I've heard that nowadays the computer is smarter than you and will compensate and give much better mileage now w/ auto, not sure if this is true either)

Cheaper

Lasts longer

Better feel for the road

More choices in different driving situations.

Slip clutch capability is nice to have at times.

More fun

Slower low-1, I think

The new six speed does only 2,000 rpms at 60 mph. Not sure if the autos can say that
