starter just goes click

Well my 1986 4runner is acting up. not all the time just about once a week or so. When I try to start it all I hear is a click. If I jump it, it will start right up. sometimes I'll just try and start it a few hours later and it will start right up. Battery is new and all wiring is clean and tight. If it clicks that means the solenoid is good and the starter it self is going bad right. just wanted to know if I was missing something before I put a new starter in it.
thanks
joe

That happens to me alllllll the time with my 89 4Runner.

This should answer your question:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...tarter+rebuild

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/starter/

I bought a 3vze rebulid kit at the Stealership for $12 which included all new contacts and hardware but I haven't had a chance to do it yet.

i had the same problem w/ my 4runner, its a 98 though, don't know if that makes a difference, it's a b***h to go up in there and get the starter out and rebuild it, i ended up not doin that and just gettin a new starter

i had the EXACT same symptoms as urs though, it would start one minute and and hour later it wouldn't, sometimes if i would turn the key over and over sometimes it would start

my advice: get a new starter

let me know what you do, im curious

My advice don't.

Here's a good link, you can get the parts from him too.

Yep!
If it's not the starter, it's the wiring. Don't be like countless others and assume that you're burning through a starter a month. Check out the tips near the bottom of 4Crawlers page.

Wiring or starter, if it wont start up right away smack it with something and it should go.

Bad advice. Most of the "rebuilt" starters you buy from the parts stores are junk. Your much better off keeping your stock starter and rebuilding it. 90% of the time all it needs is a new set of $15 contacts.

Someone told me this when I was having problems with the starter on my 98 3.4l. Sounds great, but try to find someone willing to lay on their back, with their arm up the side of the transmission, in the dark and the rain stabbing at the starter because you cant get more than about a 2" swing, to actually use it. Easier to spend a couple hours taking it out and rebuilding it.

Tap it with a hammer for now, or use a long stick(or 1inch dowel) if you don't wanna stick your arm up in there.

I keep an extra hydraulic floor jack handle in the truck just for that purpose. I thread it down just in front of/beside the air cleaner and give the starter a good rap. Works 90% of the time on the first tap. Occassionally I have to hit it twice. Never been stranded, though. Man I love that truck. Rebuild coming as soon as I can get the time to work on it.
