seting up gears
ok so im sas my 87 pickup and im setting my own gears up, i got trail gear 5.29s aussie locker front and a welded rear, i tore down the stock gears pressed old bearings and races out and i got the new ones in, i got the solid pinion spacers for both difs, im working on setting up the front dif now and i used all the spacers that came in the kit and its about the right death for root to tip but i cant my toe to heal pattern set right im at .007 for back lash but its really close to the heal on the drive side. i got the pinion pre load set to 13in lbs with no shims on the spacer. i need some help i cant figure it out im lost right now. and are these the right steps to set it up? and do you have to torque the carrier adjusters to 75, or just leave them alone after you get the right back lash?
1.set pinion pre load drag to about 13in lbs, set by torque pinion nut
2.set carrier in and put on cap and set back lash to .007
3.torque caps to 75ft lbs
4.check back lash again and adjust to .007
5.paint teeth and apply pressure on the drive side with a breaker bar and check patten

Dropzone is right, check out ZUKs site, gearinstalls.com. Post some pics of your pattern, it sounds like you know what you are doing and you've done some good work.
I'm fairly certain ZUK would tell you to torque the adjusters (read his site). After backlash is set, you can then mark them and turn both of them the same amount which will increase your preload without affecting your backlash.
One more thing, being that you are talking about the front diff, I think the "coast" side is the side you really want to focus on. Again, from ZUKs site, he would say that coast side should favor the toe and I have seen patterns on his setups where drive side is more on the heel in a front application.
Let's see pics, it really sounds like you did a great job.

i was talking to my shop teacher and hes helping me out now and he said there is no torque valve on the adjusters, once the right back lash is found that's were you leave them at, i will get some picture as soon as i finish it up tonight

Also, drive is high and heavy toe. Coast is high as well.
