Self-Painting Your Rig, Good Primer?

Having recently ventured into the realm of a home spray paint job on my rig, Id like to find a good primer.

Today I primed the hood with some Rustoleum x2 coverage primer.

All I have to say is what a rip off! Maybe with a better tip it would be okay but the spray pattern on this is the size of a quarter. Two coats (on whole can) on my hood and its still splotchy!

What primer have you had luck with?

Any word on the "durability" of a paint job with the $2 walmart cans??

did you prep the matal? what kind of paint are you looking for your top coat to be? gloss? if you're not paiting gloss, dont even bother with primer. flat paint IS bassicly primer. If you are doing gloss, prep it good, prime it, then wetsand/re-prep it or it will come out like doo-doo.

here's mine. used the walmart cans of kyrlon, and walmart clearcoat.

before

after

and here's my write-up on page 3

I don't know if you have availability to a Grainger account they have a excellent selection of paints. But you could check out Eastwood also.

Thanks muddog! and as a note, "pre-wash" is actually what i refer "after-wash" as....the reason being, is because i use it BEFORE i paint LOL if you cant get ahold of it, you can also use acetone, same thing bassicly, but more harsh. It should work on metal, but i'd be leary about putting it on plasic, i have an idea it may dry it out, or even melt it or make it warp.
