Yea, I know! I feel stupid for not knowing. On other cars like 4cy's it's right there on top out in the open, but it's hidden on this darn 3.0 I know suspensions and stuff pretty well, but when it comes to any engine component besides and alternator or starter or trans, I'm in the dark.

And FYI this is where the PCV vacuum port is and you should attach a hose here and suck up the Seafoam slowly. I dunked the hose in the bottle very quickly, let it sit for a second, and then revved up the motor a little to clear the smoke, and repeated.

I repeated the treatment a 2nd time, and it BILLOWED WHITE SMOKE while sucking in the Seafoam. Didn't really smoke a whole lot after I let it sit for 20 minutes or so. I actually got the video camera rolling hoping to see some big smoke but was rather disappointed. The smoke that I got sucking in the Seafoam for the 2nd time was about 5 times as much! Anyways, here's the video.

It's a 500k "mpeg" video file, without sound. It came out with some funky extension, but plays fine on my computer. Enjoy!

You might just ask an old mechanic what they use to burn the carbon out of the cylinders and from the intake valves. I used Marvel Mystery Oil for years and to tell you the truth, other than the fact that the SF is thinner and may wash some crud from the inside of the manifold, I don't see much difference between the two.

I pick up some Morey's upper cylinder lube,do you think i should try this method with it.the do have a system you can buy that drip feeds it into the intake if you want to so i cant see how putting it in via the pcv could hurt, even though they say dont do this with the drip feed system.
What do you think, i might try it today.

Is the tale true? Super unleaded is the cleanest of them all ?

Look back about a foot from the oil cap on the valve cover and you will see a black plug with hose going into the intake plenum....that's it. Today I used a smaller vacuum line connected by the distributor and nearer the front of the plenum on my 22RE. Had to rev mine to about 2-2500 to keep it from stalling.

Anyone know where the phrase smoke and mirrors came from?

All gas is filtered at the refinery and again at the pump and yet again via your fuel filter. But, I just changed my 2 year old FF and quite a bit of gunk came out. If you want to buy SU, it's fine, but don't expect anything other than maybe a little mpg boost. I think the few tanks I ran through mine averaged about 1mpg better. Maybe my computer allowed the spark to advance a little further because there was no predetonation.

i think smoke and mirrors is from carnies. or magicians... if this is a completely inappropriate response...i guess that sucks.
i've heard that super unleaded fuels are only better in that they have an anti-knocking agent. you might experience better fuel economy since you don't have to battle your pistons knocking. other than that you are only paying for some fat cat texan, or saudi, to sit back and drink a nice cold beverage in the hot as hell climates they live in.

hey, guys, new to the forum, and just acquired my runner in january. well i have 155k miles on it now, and after reading all you guys said, i decided to do the seafoam thing.
at first i was very chicken, and so i just did a full can into half a tank, and boy, did the ride feel so smooth and crisp. well temptation got the best of me so i couldn't resist doing the intake job, so this afternoon i used about a half a can. at first i was really scared of killing the engine so i poured the stuff in slow, too slow, and so when i came back 10 minutes later, it barley smoked. the second time around, i went ahead and poured till it almost stalled and i only waited 5 minutes, and boy did it smoke up a storm. it was white smoke, so i don't know if thats ok or not, but there was so much smoke every where. the differences i've noticed that i get a better response when is push the gas pedal and the engine seems to have a lower idle but a constant idle. i'm happy with the results, but here comes my guilt from being happy, can anything go wrong from this treatment?

i mean everything runs fine now, but has anybody ever had anything go bad from this? i'm a bit paranoid right now, and i'm not afraid of throwing a rod from getting hydrolocked, passed that.

i'm just a newb so i'm kinda worried
any help will be appreciated!!!!

thanks
jay

umm i decided to go with the brake booster line, simplest and easiest to find for me. and it was suggested on the can, so why not right? haha. it was easy to pour the stuff in because the engine did a good job sucking the seafoam down. i stalled out once, but that was ok, gave me a scare when it turned over like twice before starting, but its ok. i'm just paranoid if everything will stay ok haha. i'm always afraid of that "too much of a good thing" scenario. smoked like crazy, but i'm glad for it because its a sign of the seafoam working!

overall i'm a happy camper.

I'm sold on the seafoam, i'm going to go grab some tomorrow. Unsure about the ISR and MAF mods/cleaning, could someone send me a message on how to do those as well?

After driving my rig for a few days after the Seafoam, I havent really seen any results. The only thing I've noticed was a lower idle and MAYBE, just MAYBE, a hint of better performance in the upper RPM range, but thats probably in my head. I have another can I'm going to suck up and see if that does anything.

Also, my lower idle kind of feels like its stumbling. When I removed the hose from the PCV valve, it felt kind of loose. Now if I start it up and jiggle the hose, i can hear air sucking. Did I partially yank off my PCV valve? I cant even see where the friggin thing actually connects to the PCV valve due to the huge mess of hoses. I tried pushing on it but no luck.

As others mentioned, check your spark plugs in a week or two and make sure they're not fouled. All just depends on the condition of the engine I guess, but if its running okay now, I wouldn't be too worried.

Talking Spark plugs

I did the seafoam about 3 weeks ago and I just changed the spark plugs Sunday night as part of my 60K service. This is what they looked like, so you be the judge (new on the left, old on the right).

Cost me $12 to replace them with OEM Denso plugs and about an hour worth of labor. You should also clean your MAF, your TB, your air filter and do other routine maintenance accordingly.

I know after doing all these things the 4Runner runs a lot smoother and has better acceleration.

Good luck!
