it's best to get in touch w/ them w/ your specific info. from what i understand, then changed types a couple of times for the 3rd gens, and also cali-spec runners had different ones as well.

1996-1998 4WD manual V6-3.4; Front = 234-4161
1996-1998 4WD manual; Rear = 234-4154

1998 All other 4runners; Front = 234-4162
1998 All other 4runners; Rear = 234-4154
So, if we're talking about the truck in your sig, I'm thinking you want the 234-4161, ($89.99)

Just take it to the firehouse...do the Seafoam...Soap up the exterior...let them make believe it is a fire and hose your truck down as an fire fighting exercise!!!

I don't know if you've read all the posts but I posted a while ago my theory on that. I think that since it's an older truck the gunk inside has really set. Midiwall suggested letting the stuff sit for longer than 15 min. Let it sit for about4 hours and you'll see a lot more smoke than the 15 min. treatment.

Seafoam question

when seafoaming a 4runner can you take off the o2 sensor (s) in the exhausts pipes while seafoaming so all the nasty gunk wont get into ur o2 sensors?

good question, but you should really try to add it to one of the existing seafoam threads. thus, it's being merged...

i asked this question earlier in the thread and what they told me was that it would be fine, except for the fact that the o2 sensor is screwed into the exhaust pipe from the top and without the sensor in there there would be a bunch of hot gasses going out by the floorboard and could cause a fire. the suggestion was to get a cover or something to bolt on there to protect the floor from the heat. i haven't tried it, but that's what i know.

I have a boxster that when started after sitting for more than a few days smokes like hell too -- since the oil works its way past the rings and into the combustion chamber. I'm not sure all the smoke really means it's working. Just my 2 cents if anyone cares.
I work in the oil Industry for a company that supplies the goodies that go in most of these products. The blue/white smoke is indeed burning off the 'solvent' used to carry the active ingredients. I this case, the solvent is a very light or very volatile oil.

It will burn in your engine (just like the blue /white smoke you say when your engine is burning its own oil past the rings and seals).

It is not true to say a lot of blue/white smoke means a lot of crap...it just means a lot of cleaner and a lot of solvent.

Most of these products (injection cleaners) are about 10% max active ingredient/90% solvent or carrier which just aloows the good stuff to get where it needs to go.

I am a every firm believe in fuel injection cleaners and treatments and in newer vehicles, you can do essentially the same thing buy using good gas (Shell V Power for instance) periodically.

I personally use an Amsoil injector cleaner every 3 months.

On the subject of other 'mystery' additives, after seeing the millions of dollars spent getting Crancase Oils and ATFs to meet all the Industry standards and formally approved versus the standards and knowing how little of the wrong stuff can mess things up, I do not use ANY aftermarket additives for lubes.

From a technical point of view and knowing the chemistry, there is not one ATF top treat or additive on the market today that works better than a good quality ATF in the first place.

A modern lube or ATF is such a complex blend of chemicals that introducing new and in some cases, unusual chemicals can actually cause the chemicals to compete or fight each other. Most (not all) of these aftermarket lube additives never even test for the most basic compatibility with the fluids they are supposed to protect.

Some are downright harmfull. Others make mind numbingly false claims. Even a tiny amount of research will tell you that you cannot move one product to a new OEM approved performance standard by adding anything...just not physically possible.

Just look at the way Slick 50 pretty much overnight dropped thier claims and completely changed the way they marketed that additive. They got challenged in court and could not back up ONE of the claims they made !

Anyway, glad Seafoam is working out. I use a very similar product at a lower treat every time I change my oil. I must find out who supplies the goodies in Sea Foam

Toysrme started a thread yesterday talking about blown head gaskets in an engine. In the process of documenting his travels through the block, he posted up some internal pictures post Seafoam.

The thread is here, the Seafoam pic and comment is the 3rd one down in his opening message.

Sup guys,

Just wondering, i have a 4th gen with 17k on the odometer. Will this stuff effect my rig, as it has yours? Where to put it in under the hood? Does it have good results when put straight into the tank? How much to put in the tank I.E. how much of can vs. fuel in tank?

Thanks boys

17K miles shouldn't have any significant build-up. At least not enough for you to run SF through. Have you read the entire thread? If not, I strongly suggest that you do.

Ok guys..
Just did 2 cans in the intake, and one in the nearly empy empty tank on the new 4Runner (145k miles). I'm changing the plugs, fuel filter, and wires (original wires from 96) later today. (brakes, too) One thing I noticed when doing this was the amount of smoke I got *under* the hood. Seems like the exhaust is leaking from somewhere..but my exhaust sounds *very* normal, and much quieter than the old 97. I don't remember getting smoke under the hood before, do any of you?
