I don't know nor have I heard about Rust Bullet, but I have heard of POR15. From what I have heard it is good stuff. A lot of hot rodders use it on their frames and I believe POR stands for: Paint Over Rust. So you could just paint it on right over the rust.

I just used POR-15 last week on some rusted areas. I won't know how effective it is for probably a year or so. It's difficult to guage the effectiveness of POR-15 until moisture and air have had their time with it.

I thought this thread would get more response then this. I know many people always talk about it on here. I just used Chassis Saver last week so I don't know the long term effects yet.

a friend that constantly rebuilds and restores cars said the best you can get is POR15, i bought it (PRICEY!!) and used it on my trailer hitch and other exposed rusty areas... (the original compound only works on hidden areas, as its UV reactive.. loses all pigments, but you can paint over it)

have no complaints, the stuff i painted still looks great, no new rust.. and i live in a VERY salty area, only wish i took the time to wire brush my whole chassis and paint it too (hope to do it this weekend) although, when i do, i plan to coat over the POR15 with that rubberized paint, my theory, best rust killer, plus a good rock chip defender = one long lasting frame.

Rather than starting a new thread I figured I'd resurrect this one. What's the latest on the Rust Bullet v. POR 15 discussion? Presumably people have each product on their trucks for awhile. What's the scoop?

Ever since I painted my truck white (used to be black) I can see small spots of body rust and deal with them before they get worse. I have some surface rust around one of my door hinges that needs fixing. I'd like to use the best product available.

I use POR-15 a lot, the primer and the semi-gloss Chassis Black Topcoat (for UV protection). It holds up quite well. If you use the Metal-Prep acid etch before painting or go over rusted metal it sticks great. I do my sliders, bumpers, axles, etc. with it.

I have used por15 quite a bit. It will stop rust, but you cant just brush it on expect it to work. You have to make sure the area is CLEAN. Make sure there are no scales of rust overlapping other metal.

Also, USE GLOVES. The first time I used this stuff I thought I could just clean it off my hands with some thinner. WRONG. I was running aroung with por15 all over my hands for a week. Dont put the lid back on the can without cleaning the channel out or you will NEVER get the lid off again. Ask me how I know.

I used Rust Bullet because less prepwork is required. I can't comment yet how it works, have to wait until after the winter.

I know that up the road from me their is a company that does full restorations of IH Scouts. They swear by POR15 and use it liberally in restoring the vehicles the receive.

Thanks everyone! I checked with the guy who painted my truck as well. He hadn't heard of Rust Bullet. But, he had heard of POR 15 and knew it had a good reputation. He also mentioned that the way he eliminated rust was to treat the rusted area with acid as part of the prep procedure prior to repainting. I think I'll go with the POR 15.

That is likely the Metal-Ready acid etch I mentioned in my post. Yes, that works well, dissolves the heavy rusted deposits and also etches the bare steel for better adhesion.

The other product you might consider is Eastwood.com's Rust encapsulator, its cheaper than POR-15 and atleast as effective. I've used it to restore a 62 Dodge to good effect. Easy to paint over, etc.

There's another distributor, por15-depot http://www.stoprust.net/ they have a coupon listed on another forum, 10% off i think? google classic broncos por15 & it should be one of the top links. I used that coupon when I ordered mine.

Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator as a primer followed by Chassis Black epoxy paint works great. The Chassis Black epoxy takes a few days to fully dry, but it's pretty durable once it hardens. (The surface dries in about an hour or two, but will feel sticky for a few days.) Both are available in quart cans or spray cans. The Rust Encapsulator needs a little thinning to be sprayed from a gun. The Chassis Black can be used directly.

Nope, but the Duplicolor engine primer and engine paint (the 500 degree ceramic stuff) work pretty darn good for small jobs. The stuff dries very quickly and produces a pretty decent finish for a spray can.
