True. But rust is an unstable base for paint. Even when the paint is suitable for spraying over rust, I still give it a good wire brushing and treat it with a chemical rust converter. The rustoleum may stop further rust, but it's still going to have adhesion problems simply because the rust itself is loose.

thats what i was asking, not whether it could be sprayed on rust, but if anyone has used it for small jobs of stopping rust....

depends on how much rust you have and how long you want it to last.

I'm currently fully restoring an 88 4rnr, so I'm operating in the 'make it last forever' mode. But even for small jobs, I still use a rust converter before painting.

I have used rust bullet and por 15 now and have had excellent results from both. rust bullet is a little cheaper and less prep but because of the extra prep the por 15 seems safer but like I said neither has let me down to date.

I tried using Rustoleum Rust Primer under Rustoleum flat black to slow down the rust on my hitch. I chiseled scraped off the flakes of rust but did not take it down to clean metal. It's been about 3 months and small rust spots are starting to show through dozens of places.

I know this is an old thread and the only reason I joined this forum is to give some input. I have used both products and I believe Rust Bullet to be a superior product. There is less prep work, and the long term results have made up my mind with regards to the choice. Anyone who has used Rust Bullet, if you prepared your surface properly and applied a minimum of 2 coats, has it been compromised? Mine hasnt. Try to get the stuff off...it doesnt come off

we have a P.A at work that painted his Cj with por15 its like jb weld paint he said it was a complete pain to have it go over the entire truck and look perfectly but i mean come on his litle cj is almost bullet proof now its pricey though
