Removing Spray Paint Coats

Currently my 85 4runer is rattle canned flat black. Its chipping in some spots and peeling, so i want to explore my options for repainting it. Has anyone had success in removing spraypaint coats down to the factory paint, while keeping the factory coat? If so, what method did you use?
Thanks

the only way to do that would be to sand off the spray paint but not break through the factory paint...it its still all there.

No matter what you sand off you will have to repaint or have a scuffed and scruffy truck. There are no easy do's on truck painting. There is only one way.

if it ends up looking shotty and awful, which is probably will, atleast ill have a better base to start with when i paint it right. Im thinking the marine paint roll on method, have a friend who did it and it came out great and saw it on a few other forums too.

You don`t need to sand anything, use lacquer thinner and go slow and you will get the spray paint off. Ive done this many tines to remove spray paint or over spray.

Yea, just use an old rag and take your time and you wont damage the original paint.
Once your done wax the original paint and it should look good.

Awesome, thanks for the help. I doubt it will be in good shape if someone painted over it, but its worth a shot
