Rear window gets caught sometimes while moving

The power rear window on my '87 4runner tends to stick, or get caught when it moves up or down. It moves a few inches, then sounds like it grabs on something, then moves another few inches and does it again. It gets caught-up about 5 times when going from the full open to closed position, or vise-versa. I took the tailgate out of my friends truck, but his seems to do the same thing.

It seems to be a common problem, and I would guess that other people may have experienced this problem also. Any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks,
Tim

So you keep pressing and holding the up switch and eventually it goes all the way up but it just catches 5 or so times on the way? Mine does that too... I think either a tooth it missing like mentioned above or one of the springs is sort of binding and releasing.

OK, so, the gear on the window motor was completely stripped. I used a 1991 toyota camry FRONT-DRIVER side power-window motor. There is another thread on here regarding the subject, which is how I found the fix. It says to use a passenger side motor, however, that was not the correct motor. (at least at Autozone.) You will need to splice/solder the wires, but it works great!

BTW, all of the auto part distributor's websites listed this as "not in stores, special order only". This was WRONG! Call your local parts supplier despite what the website says regarding availability!
