Rear diff fluid question

. . . lets say I have two bottles/litres of 80W-90 and one 75W-90, would it hurt anything to mix one 75W with the two 80W? I'm hoping not. Thanks guys.

I don't know the answer to your actual question, but it's a good question, cuz while the owner's manual lists the capacity as 2.3 qts, took the better part of 3 bottles to do mine...(I used Redline Heavy Shockproof)

My guess is that since the hot viscosity is the same (90), it will be OK - but don't risk your diff on my meager knowledge!

I buy axle/trans lube in gallon jugs and put it in with a pump.

You will just end up with a 77W-90. No problem.

Thanks guys, I was changing my fluid on my 04 Tundra/LSD and the manual calls for 3.1 L, but in reality it is only about 2.5L, so I only used .5L of the 75W-90. In the future/next 15,000 miles I will be sure to have 3 quarts or more of the 80W-90 for the rear-differential so I don't have to worry about it again.

Thanks again for the info.

I have always heard it was Ok to mix weights of the same brand, but can be bad to mix weights of two different brands. Just what I heard.

Thanks again, I used Valvoline as I have used Castrol in the past since it says that it/both can be used in Limited Slip applications and I assume I don't need the friction modifier that I used one time because it says it is good for limited slip diff's.

Believe me, I'd go with synthetic but the Mobil 1 full-syn is about $9 compared with $4 for the regular stuff, I can't justify the cost/benefit ratio.

Redline synthetic is $7.50/qt at Summit Racing - a great deal IMHO.

I would like to use/try all these oils however, when they are not on a shelf at the local AutoZone or Wal-Mart, and BTW, all Wal-Mart has is the Tech2000 oil which is no good for LSD's, then I have no choice but to use what they sell at the local place. Sure, I could order away for the stuff but I can't be bothered, guys are lucky that have all these places and selections of stuff for sale.

I recently learned how to use the rear diff dutton on my 99 limited and went to try it out..all it did was flash...so i went to the mall and found a pile of melting snow and tried to get a wheel to spin. once i suceded i pushed the button and it flashed again, went through all gears and neutral but it wouldnt "lock" and i had to go to 4low to move. any help?? i was in 4wheel at the time.

Without a simple mod (look in the mods section of the forum), that's how your 4Runner will act, it will not let you use your locker unless you are in 4Low. It's a really easy mod, check it out.

Yep "grey wire" mod IIRC. Search on TTORA too - very common mod for TRD Tacomas.

www.ttora.com - their forum uses the same software as this one, so everything works similarly. I had better luck searching "grey" than "gray".

Foun this link - hope it helps:
