"possibly" Third gen dash cup holders

Possibly is in the title, cuz i can't remember if what i want is in a third gen or second gen.

I searched the forum, and haven't come up with anything to work with as far as installing cup holders in my truck.

So, i'm going to use my ash tray spot and fab some junk, and i'll post a write up in the tech section.

Heres what i need to know.

First, IIRC, the third gen 4runner has a cup holder that slides in and out in the dash, and i need to know the side to side dimension on that, if someone who has one can quick run out and measure it.

Second, is, what is the part number on that particular cup holder, in black?

Lastly, if anyone has a better idea, or a better cup holder that they think would work better, let me know. I'm looking for something that stows, but am not opposed to full time out, they just can't go in the dash that way.

ike,

the 96-98s had them. after that, no more indash cupholders (thank goodness).

i have one of those...it does have textured spray paint on it, but i can probalby remove it. if you'd like to buy it, ill sell it to you for $12 shipped. ill pull it out and measure it for you later this afternoon.

of note, there are slide tracks that it slides onto and then locks whne pressed onto the ends.

so, you think this may be a bad way to go?

What was it that you don't like about them?

I may want to rethink this, but if i go for the original idea, i'll buy them from you.

It would work alot better in the trucks and 4Runners if it was mounted in or around the ashtray area. My old 93 camry had it thier-only complaint was shifting into park it rubbed the drink a bit.

I dont know if it would work on anything but a colum shift like my T100, but its worth a shot.

Bob, i think i am going to do something different, but i still want your cup holders. However, you mentioned the tracks...I'm assuming this is part of your dash and i will need to fab it. Could you clarify that bit, as well as the measurements? Thanks man, i appreciate it.

The ash tray is going to be a problem for the reason that CJM mentioned, you'll whack your hands on the drinks when shifting: a big problem for a 5speed.

I may take up upholstry work, and fab something to fit the dash...We'll see.

Ike,
the cup holder your talking about is probably the biggest complaint among 2nd gen and '96-'98 4runner owners (mine was swaped out with a '99+ console/bezel-when Toyota finally decided to change the design).
The problem is there mounted so high up, that the slightest bounce, turn, or dip in the road causes your drink to spill. There better than nothing but NOT an ideal place to be mounted.

Heres a pic of 2nd gen dash piece (stole it from Cebby)

you can see below the 2 vents where the cup holder slides in and out. The '96-'98 is very similar and mounted just as high.

If you found a good location, i could see this cup holder working great...

or maybe this one...

the cupholder itself is 6.5 long and almost 4.75" at its widest point. there are two tabs on it, when depressed downwards, that allows it to be slid out from the tray.

the tray is permanently attached to the center console, but it could be dremel'd out. it could be plastic cemented (or some other method) into place, but you will have to figure that one out.

it would probably be best to sell you the entire thing minus the hazard, defroster, cig lighter, etc so you can have the whole thing to work with. $20 + shipping work for ya?

axle,

i have another alternative for you, but it might require some creative fab'g on your part: i have a 99-style cupholder. not the entire console, but the cupholder part. if you have room between your seats, this might be an option. see pic

Bob, let me think on that....I do like that console that goes between the seats, but as of right now, it'd be a ton of work to put that in. However, not out of the realm of possibility, so i'll let you know today or tommorow which one to ship. Thanks.

you might also consider the rear fold out cupholder that sits in the rear of the center console in 3rd gens

I used to have a single cup holder that bolted to the rear of the console, but the problem was, when i'd put the seats down, i couldn't use the cup holder. It sucked. Then that broke, and not having one at all is really hard, so i'm going to try and do something that will work all the time. Thanks for the suggestion though Peter.

Might be easiest to swap in a center console from a 01+ Tacoma, assuming you don't have rear heat in the 4Runner. The console has 2 cup-holders and might easily work around your shifters as well. There is a person who has done this (name I forget) and it looks great in his 85.
