Possible Corolla brake problem

Hey everyone, I just recently purchased a 2010 Corolla S with only 24K miles on it. I really like the car and the 35mpg average I am getting is fantastic. the problem is with the brakes I think. When pressing the brakes, they seem to go pretty far, almost haflway to the floor, before they grab. When they grab they grab real firm. They scare my wife but I can deal with it. I took it to the dealer and they adjusted the rear brakes, they said they were out, but the feel persists.
Does anyone here have a corolla with the same brake feel or should I just take it back to have them look at it again? I have done some research and the problems people are having with the Corolla brakes are pretty scary.

I posted this same thing on Toyotanation but they were of little help.
