i kinda wonder if you could use a marine tank? they are easy to find and generally flat so they would fit up under the axle better maybe??

For the record, no one makes a drop in replacement plastic tank for a Toyota truck. It wouldn't make economical sense.

You will be looking for an aftermarket fuel cell like this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-290108

And anyone saying plastic tanks aren't "safe", we use them in Figure 8 cars which get rear ended, beat on, bashed up, drug across the track surface, and they do just fine. A skid plate is necessary for any fuel tank, thats just common sense.

The thin sheet metal of an OEM fuel tank isn't any stronger than the thick plastic of a plastic fuel cell. 4000 lbs of truck wont care what your fuel tank is made of, it will damage it if its not protected.

That's what I am realizing. I can't find anything as far as a drop in plastic tank.

These kids don't understand that if a plastic tank was unsafe. No one would make them. I mean come on. If they make them for some motorcycles, they have to be as reliable as metal tanks. Who would want fuel between their legs if they thought they might blow up in the event of a lay down.

Thanks for your help.

I didn't say plastic cells were unsafe, I said personally I wouldn't trust an OEM style drop in tank in a hardcore wheeler. Which by the looks of your avatar, you wheel it pretty hard.
I would take a plastic cell over my oem steel tank, but I would take my OEM steel tank over a plastic replacement.

Plastic Fuel Tank

I have a 89 Toy SR5 Pickupi that is going to be a road truck for my 16 year old son going to HS. We are going through the normal maintaince things. And we are also interested in finding a source for a plastic gas tank, if available.

Plastic tanks are used on Jeeps and they wheel just as hard as we do. Plastic tanks are VERY safe.

To the OP, you will probably have to use one from another vehicle and modify it to fit or use a fuel cell. Then do not forget about electrical issues for the sending unit. It can be done but it may take some time.
