pinion bearing rplcmnt

is this a do it yourself job or take it to the shop. i can do most of my own wrenchin but never had to mess with internal drivetrains.my buddy started talkin about shims,lash an few other terms, im thinkin it might be over my head any info would help

Which bearing? Front diff? Rear? T-case? Depending on which one...you may even want to go with a good used differential. I have something going on with my rear diff, not sure what, but it's expensive to have shop work on stuff in there. I ended up finding a lower mileage used 3rd for free in California. Had to pay for shipping, but $50 is a heck of a lot cheaper than a shop pulling it apart and replacing things. But if you've got money and want to the peace of mind that you have a 3rd in great shape...go ahead and take it to a shop. I was happy to have one that was supposedly in good shape with low mileage (for a Toyota).
