Not-so-cheap mod: On board air

10 Gallon tank
7 Gallon tank
dual air compressors (1 - MV50 and 1 - MF-1050, virtually the same compressor)
home grown 4 tire system (orange hoses) similar to roger browns 4air system
27DC Stoway Deep Cycle Battery
Ford Starter solenoid for compressor actuation
Remote control relay unit from headlights on other truck for wireless on/off of compressors
10 foot yellow coil hose
25 foot blue coil hose
air gauge and on/off switch (switch not seen) by driver seat
1/2" Air Gun

I was fortunate enough to get a lot of this stuff for free (7 gal tank, battery, 1 air gauge, yellow coil hose, several feet of 1/4" ID hose, Air Gun) but this definately is not a cheap setup. I would estimate everything cost me somewhere in the neighborhood from 225-300 dollars.

I had the MV50 compressor from a long time ago, which i bought at Kragen. Then Kragen stopped selling them, changed the name to MF-1050 and sold them at PepBoys. The original MV50 is a great compressor. the MF-1050 is the same thing, but I am on my 4th one. I keep breaking them, lol

Most of my brass fittings were purchased at Lowes, and some at home depot

Most of the air stuff can be seen here. red compressors, orange 4 tire system, black tank, black battery

this is the smaller tank in my back seat. This is only a temporary spot for it, as i have no idea where to put it

gauge up front on right side of steering wheel. the on/off switch is in the same place on the left side of the steering wheel.

The original shut off valve (as seen below from this thread https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123/cheap-mods-air-tank-cargo-area-carpet-removal-30-a-86079/ ) was too slow for my liking. After every time i used my air gun, i would hear the 10-gal tank filling up the 7-gal tank. Just today I replaced that valve with a straight pipe (1/2" - 1/4" fitting on out) and now they depressurize equally.

Also, i was able to find a scrhrader valve with a 1/4" NPT thread on the other end (the same thing that RB sells) for 4 bucks at Ace Hardware. I had to special order them.

Finally, the 10-gal tank, compressors and battery are held down with d-rings i ordered from Ace hardware. The blue straps arent ratchet straps, they just have a simple lock which works well. the jack is held down with a ratchet strap.

both compressors will fill the 10-gal tank up from 0-80 PSI in roughly 3-4 minutes. the compressors get very hot and i dont like to run them very long. i have not tried to fill up both tanks. normally i just fill them up at my work.

any questions, comments, concerns, please ask.

hmmm... what kind of run time do you get on the air gun? I've pondered going to a larger tank in my system so I can run air tools, but I figure I'd blow through air too fast to make it practical.

That gun needs 90psi at 5-6cfm?

with the 7-gal tank i have successfully taken off 2 tires and put 2 on, but that's the extent that i've tested it. I'm sure i could do a whole set as long as the lugs arent on there too tight. once you get the lugs off, it doesn take much air to spin them back on. plus if you keep the compressors running, they provide quite a bit of air.

i dont know the specs of the gun, its an older one from my work that we dont use anymore

for not a whole lot more $ you can get an arb compressor. might last a little bit longer if you're blowing through the compressors from pepboys. but you can't beat the price on the other stuff you got.. for free!

Nice set up but, in the old days we'd hang an old York A.C. compressor under the hood.

Mount a tank under the frame somewhere, or a tube bumper works very well too. Add some weld in bungs for quick couplers etc. plumb it in, and blow stuff up.

The York could be turned on and off using it's A.C. electric clutch, by using a simple toggle switch. Add an A.C. idle speed up solenoid such as G.M. used on thousands of vehicles over the years to keep the engine idle speed up and go for it.

I think it's the quality of the compressors that i got. the first one i had for about 3 weeks, then suddenly the fuse blew and whenever i replaced it, it blew instantly. i took that one back and got a new one. that one was making a weird ticking sound after a while and then developed an internal air leak. returned. third pump, fuse blew instantly as soon as i turned it on for the first time. returned. now the 4th. this one seems good so far.

I heard ARB compressors arent very fast and arent meant to fill up tanks and tires and such.

by the way, that was starting out at 150 PSI that i filled up at my work. the compressors will only take it up to 125 PSI. the current safety valve on my 10-gal tank pops off at 115.

the 10-gal tank i bought at harbor freight and max PSI is 125 for the tank.

the 7-gal tank came off one of our tire mounters at my work. it has a max PSI of 170

Yeah, I run my system at 150psi - I have a 1.5gal tank now that's basically there just to feed my air horns. The tank helps a bit for the first 7 seconds of refilling the tires, but after that... the Viair 450 just pushes on through.

what mess? my setup is 100% customized and can do three times what a power tank can do. and dont forget, once that power tank is out, it's out!
