I havent decided just yet what i want to do about a clear coat. I dont really think that it 'needs' it lol but it would probably be a good idea. Any recommendations? i want to keep this on the cheap as much as possible.

Did you wet sand it?

What paint did you use?

All of the roll on jobs that I have seen don't need a clear coat because it is already shinny.

Looks good none the less.

I have not wet sanded it. I didnt have time to right when i finished it and to tell you the truth im not sure if i will wet sand it, the satin semi gloss finish is kinda growing on me. Its different. I used a gloss alkyd enamel from my local hardware store. they mixed the color for me and it wasnt what i had envisioned but i like the color none the less lol. The only thing that i am not happy about is the paint hardness. it is VERY easy to scratch it. and that is partly why i was considering a clear coat. Unless i can add some sort of a hardener to the paint and lay another coat on. at least i thought i saw somewhere online that you could get an alkyd enamel hardener, idk input is much appreciated.

thanks

When did you finish it? The paint may still be curing and not to full hardness yet - sometimes takes a few days (that's why bodyshops bake them, so they can turn it around quicker.)

when i painted my tie rod with grabber green ceramic engine paint, i scratched it the next day putting my axle in, so i left it for about a week and now i cant scratch it even with rocks, very hard after it dried

its been 2 and a half weeks and its much better than it was originally but still seems a bit easy to scratch. How long would it take to cure?

should be cured by now, especially if you've had it out in the sun, unless you have like 1,000,000% humidity (for us coloradoans, anything over 30% is a million LOL)

lol well i dont know it has been pretty humid but im not sure if its quite at the 1,000,000% mark, maybe only like 350,000% or so lol but yeah its always outside in the sun so i would assume it would be cured by now but idk. if it is cured and still seems easy to scratch would a clear help and be a good way to go? or not so much?

Is it still soft, or just not sticking to the base paint. Can you make a line in it by pressing your thumbnail hard into it (soft paint). I'm guessing that it just isn't sticking well to the original paint, in which case I don't think there's much you can really do. More layers on top of diff paint or clear or whatever you still have the prob of two layers not adhering well. Weakest link type thing. What did you do to prep the orig paint?

its adhering well to the old paint, i sanded the original paint with 80 then 100 and then 200 grit papers to get all the gloss off then cleaned the dust off and used a tack rag before painting it, it will scratch with like a fingernail or i have a pretty bad spot where someone hit it with their car door. It doesnt go back to the original paint, it just turns a lighter shade of blue where the scratches are. so idk why it does that. any thoughts? just a soft paint?
