Need some advice from the old and wise
hey guys i have a moderately built 1996 limited 4runner, has the locker and its sitting on 33s now, will post pics if somehow tells me how haha. but anyway i love 4wheeling and im trying to decide if i should sell my rig and buy an older toyota with the solid front axle to wheel and beat up rather than my newer more expensive rig. what would you guys do? any advice and insight is greatly appreciated.
thanks everyone

That depends.
...I know that is not very helpful, but how hardcore are you going to wheel, what kind of budget do you have, etc...
My buddy has a '98 runner and can do some amazing stuff with his IFS. I think that running what you have will be more cost effective than buying an old toyota (that you have to fix up more than likely), and buying a commuter car. But at the same time SFA yotas rock!

Yeah it's really a pretty personal choice. If you're going to be real rough when you're offroading, I personally wouldn't beat up my daily driver. But really, I guess it comes down to how much money you have. If you've got plenty of money, hell yes buy a beater and build & wheel it.
I don't do anything crazy, I just get to where I need to get to, and have a little fun on some roads. So my DD is plenty for what I'm doing with it offroad, and I don't beat it up. If it's going to damage my truck, I don't do it. If you don't like that attitude, I'd suggest buying something specifically for wheeling.

ya i have taken mine some places that i probably shouldnt have. this past weekend i drove up to Big Bear and hit the John Bull trail and then drove home. all the other people i went with towed their rigs there and beat them up. i drove mine and beat it up but not to bad. my budget wold depend on how much i could sell my 4runner for and i also have some money i could put on top like 3 or 4 grand. i would like something with a dual transfer case and both axles locked.

I've seen IFS trucks pull some pretty incredible stunts, things folks with beam axles up front had to double-think.
The other thing to consider when buying an older SFA truck is just how badly beat it truly is. It's no lie that Toyotas are tough and well built, but people get to thinking they're indestructible and flog them to death. What you end up buying could be dead just a few weeks after you buy, and it's getting alot more expensive to find trucks with freshly rebuilt motors and drivelines.
My suggestion is to run what you got until you break the IFS, then think about where to go from there in terms of SFA swap or beefier IFS hardware. For the price of making an older rig more reliable, you could be running duals, 4.88s and armor by the time the IFS actually fails on you.
Finally, as someone who has a DD and a fun truck, sometimes it's hard between the two vehicles to just get by financially. Cars are always going to be money pits no mater how you crunch the numbers, and the DD might end up cutting into your upgrades budget, or vice-versa.

yupp ive decided to just stick with what i have for now (96 limited 4runner) and try not to put more money into it untill the right truck at the right price comes along and then just build the other one while i drive this one around.

pretty much similar situaton i'm in. I plan on buying a supermoto and use that for the most driving during warm/cool weathers. Better gas and more fun on the road but use the truck for wheeling / hauling and such. Darn thing is burning holes in my pocket for gas money haha
