which of my trucks to offroad: toyota/jeep

ok, so i just got a 94 toyota pickup and i was wondering which truck would be better for offroading, mine of my brothers cherokee

i bought my truck to use as a pickup, but i joined YotaTech when i got it and everyone offroads these things....

my truck: stock 94 Toyota pickup, 30K miles on rebuilt 22re (140 lb/ft) and clutch, open diffs with 4.10s, 31x10.5 general AT2, 37:1 crawl gear, brush guard, IFS skid plate, tcase skid plate, custom rear bumper

my brothers truck: 96 Cherokee, 4.0 (220 lb/ft) and auto with 160K miles, 3 inch lift with s-10 rear leafs, open diffs with 3.55s, 31x10.5 general AT2, 28:1 crawl gear(ish), homemade tranny and tcase skid plate

we always used his truck as the offroader, and will continue to due so but i just wanted to know whos truck is more capable

What do you wheel?

The heep has the ability (solid front axle) to outflex the yota in the rocks.

Your brothers truck is about as big as its gonna get without dropping ALOT of money into it. You can easily throw some 33x10.50" mud terrains, some bj spacers, gear and lock the diffs and you will be laughing.

Your trucks seem pretty damn close. Take them both out and see who goes farther, 90% of its all driver.

You are probably going to get some biased responses, given that you asked this on a yota forum.

From what you've described, they will both perform pretty similarly on most terrains. If you're brother knows how to drive it, the cherokee will have an advantage on rocks because of it's solid axle. Both trucks would see huge benefits from locking the diffs.

Take them both out and find out who gets stuck. I was out this weekend with my 92 pickup and had a blast. Specks in sig. I was really impressed with the old girl. Pictures to come later...

i posted this on both yotatech and jeepforum, so far it seems that both of the trucks are evenly matched.... lockers are expensive too, just got my truck and it wasnt meant to be an offroader but from the looks of it on this site, its all these things are good for

i got a powertrax for his truck but its for an 8.25 "with positrac" and his is and open diff- his truck is and always has been for offroading, just figured if my stock yota can out perform him i would be a happy camper

Well, I ment to say with the proper lift (he says he has a lift, but Idk what kind..., or whats good in the heep world...im a toyota guy!) the soild axle can outflex the IFS. But we all know wheel travel is nothing unless you can get the power to the ground.. Lockers will make your truck go farther!

An aussie is cheap... 4cyl diffs are cheap... Factory v6 4.88 diff gears are cheap!!! (they are a bolt in mod for your truck...)

^He is probably starting to feel the onset of that "Jeep Thing", and it's starting to burn holes in his brain. Like ecstasy, minus any euphoria and add ugly body lines.

lol, my truck wasnt meant to be used for offroading, and when i do go on the trails i wont be playing in the mud to keep my body rust free, plus from what i hear lockers are horrible in the snow and were i go to school we get 20+ feet a season (in some cases 10ft in a day)... i had an aussie for his truck but it wont fit (long story).... and i dont have the cash to change out both front and rear diffs to go to 4.56 or 4.88 gears let alone the 33" tires to go with em

i dont need to "go farther" than him, the only thing his truck will ever get (due to funds) is a rear locker and some armor, if i choose to use my truck for offroading, trust me, it will outperform him by far

the question is "whos more capable as is" not "if i put 2K into my truck will i beat this truck that i built for my brother 8 months ago for $500"--- sorry if i came off sounding like an ass there lmao

but as i was saying- from the sound of it, how both the trucks sit, neither will outperform the other, right or wrong?

As they sit I would expect the XJ to be better. Disconnect the front swaybar and it'll articulate well. Also, I would expect the XJ to have a little more clearance underneath.

That doesn't mean the truck would be bad though.

Its almost impossible to straight up tell you which truck is more capible over the net.

It depends alot on terrain and the driver.

You just got to get them out there and see the limitations of both...without killing either one.

i know the limitations of his truck (he doesnt have 4x4 at the moment)
and my truck def has more ground clearance, from looking at them both side by side (from a distance of 25 ft) i would say i have 1-2 inches on him in the front and a good 3-4 inches on him in the rear...

he has the better departure angle, but i have a much better approach angle and breakover angle, and i have by far more armor but i also have IFS and 100hp lol

Disconnect the front sway bar, that'll help a bit. I found the 100 HP is good, keeps the wheels from spinning so easily, thus more traction. At least that's what I tell myself.

*can open, worms everywhere*

I don't think at this point either truck has a huge advantage over the other. The Jeep has the lift and SFA, the Yota has a better crawl ratio and a newer engine as well as some armor.

Since I'm on a Yota forum and have never wheeled a Jeep I'll be leaning towards the Yota a little bit. I've wheeled Scouts and Yotas and in both cases I've gone farther than a similar equiped Jeep while on the trail, most of the time. I can't say that I'm some sort of rock genius when it comes to off road but I can say I tend to pick better lines since I hate body damage.

Meh! Go out and follow the Jeep up a few trails and then swap so you can lead with the Yota. Don't buy anything new until you need it and learn to wheel what you have. That way the little upgrades make a huge difference when you get them. A guy who's wheeled his rig with open diffs and no lift will go farther than a guy who hasn't once he gets the rear locked, lifted etc. Learn the limits of either rig and upgrade accordingly.

Oh and post pics when you have to drag the Jeep out of a hole that you just went through.

The only jeep I wheeled was my old 95 ZJ, it did alot better than my 4Runner now, the 4.0 power with coiled solid axles worked great. But Jeeps are only good until they break...toasted the trans halfway into Philly from Ocean City MD, lift mode all the way back to central pa from Philly....what fun.

All of my Toyota's never let me down tho...well maybe the IFS ones
