My rear end...

I've read the thread on lunchbox type lockers, and the lockrite thread, And I'm trying to decide if I want to get a limited slip, detroit locker, or a lockright... so far heres what I know..

Limited Slip
Pros: Great on street, better offroading than I can do now
Cons: Eventually wears out... Expensive

Detroit
Pros: Awesome offroad, strong
Cons: Wears out tires? Sucks on road? Fill me in!

Lunchbox
Pros: Cheap!
Cons: Weak?

Actually the Detroit truetrac doesnt wear out. It's a gear-type LSD and doesnt use clutch discs. It's also extremely strong since its a full dif replacement.

Cons: If a tire loses (my best guess based on personal experience) 90%+ traction the differential will then behave like a fully open (Stock) dif. IE one wheel off the ground you resort back to the same performance as a stock differential.

Great for the guy who spends A LOT of time in snow and is really just looking for a moderate performance gain.

Wears out tires? Sucks on Road? Not really. Just be prepared to re-learn how to drive your truck because it will behave differently on the road and off. It behaves the same as all the other Autolockers. The difference w/ the Detroit is that it (like the truetrac) is a full differential replacement. You don't re-use the stock carrier. It's extremely strong and you seldom hear of them 'wearing out' or breaking. Not cheap.

Lunchbox
Pros: Cheap!
Cons: Weak?
If you want an autolocker and have a stock carrier that isn't worn out this is a good cost effective upgrade. Lockrights are cheaper than full dif replacements (ie Detroit) but definetly weaker and you hear of them wearing out over time and/or breaking. As an alternative to either the Detroit and the Lock-Right you might look at the Powertrax No-slip (its a lockright variant)

From what I've 'read' (i have no experience with it) it's a lot quieter, smoother and they say it's stronger.

have fun

no-slip

definitly smoother and quieter than the lock-rite/aussie, after some break-intime and relearning to corner they are invisible. they do run about a hundred bucks more though and still increase tire wear as all lockers will.

Well thanks for the help guys, I was seriously thinking about the Detroit "LSD" or the full on locker, I really don't want a locker because I don't want to make driving my truck a chore if you know what I mean... Also I am HARD on my truck, I could probably tear the out of that Lunchbox because I powerbrake my truck alot more than the average person, and I drive about like Ivan Stewart so... I might go with the Detroit "LSD"....

even witht he lsd you have to take it easy around corners, i would just go with the detroit or you could spend the big bucks and get an arb or elocker.

i beat the h$LL out of my no-slip and it never gave me any grief, and that was in a d35 with stock axles. the toy carriers and axles are stronger. and with a locked rear youll be able to just crawl over things and not have to brawl your way through things, which is much easier on the axles/diffs & u joints. the lsd's are nice but they kinda fall short, your gonna have to learn how to tap dance on the pedals to keep the traction goin to the wheel that needs it. if youve got the coin do the detroit if not go for the no-slip.
