grandpa has a 62 ford pickup with the original inline 6 (and 4speed tranny) that starts everytime and puts along just great. miles are unknown but hes had it for years and years and says he cant remember EVER working on anything but the brakes.. but i have to say, IMO, honda and toyota build the best engines OVERALL. thats just my experience and opinion thou.. have had good luck with the GM 3.8s and ford 5.0s, just the rest of the cars intergrity is junk!

I almost bought a 2wd tacoma with 749k miles original engine, auto tranny and never burned any oil, regular maintenance, I think it went through like 7 timing chains though. 2rz?? I think?
22re, 350 chevy, chevy slant 6, 3.4, 2.2L camry motor (cant remember engine code). Any flat 4 engine is really reliable, I saw one with 300k getting a head rebuilt and the factory cross hatch pattern was still on the cyl walls

I'm going to give the 5VZFE another vote here.
BTW my old mechanical engineering professor told us the secret to the VW bug engine lasting so long was the very long head bolts. The longer they are the more they stretch when torquing them down, giving more clamping force. IIRC I think he said the head bolts go all the way though the engine.

Subaru Boxer engine... in general. Its just a strong design. I had a 89 Sub station wagon and the think was like a tank.
I say becuase while Im seeing a lot of high milage engines...there are a lot that need a lot of TLC to get there. The question was 500k W/O a lot of TLC.
My personal fav. Any small block v-8, ford or chevy from the 60's. Why? Lower RPMS reduced the stress on that simplistic, bulletproof design. Guzzles gas, sure..but come WWIII; im grabbing a 67 chevy to drive.

Someone mentioned it earlier so I'm just putting my vote in for the Slant 6.
They have these enduro-like races at the local destruction derby every year: You take a junk car, drain the oil and race around the track until your car explodes.... Winners are usually running a 22RE or a slant 6.
