Most reliable engine made?

V-Dub Flat-4 or the BMW inline 6. Ive owned several of each with over 300k and the biggest issues were overly ticky valves on both.
I have a 3.0vze now that hasnt done me wrong, but its the 1st Yota engine Ive had.

I had an 85 Nissan pickup, I beleve was a 2.4L 4 cyl. 8 spark plugs, I bought it with 180,000 miles. When I sold it for $500 more it had 473,000 miles on it. I dogged the mess out of that truck and could not kill it. Went through everything else on it but never messed with the motor.
And of course the 22re mine has 190,000 miles on the bottom end just had the HG go out.

Ok, here's one nobody would guess. I have 2 1998 Dodge Neon R/T's, one has 288,000 miles and the other 445,000. The higher mileage one was the SCCA Rallycross National Champion in 2007 with over 390,000 miles on it.
Air Cooled VW's? I've had 3 and all were a PIA.

ha ha thats awesome, i used to have a 91 integra b-18 non vtec and it had aroung 325,000 on it and for the two years i owned it i red lined every time i shifted and beat the piss out of it and it didnt consume a drop of oil and had great compression still, i did a timing belt and it ran even better, thats why you buy cars from old ladies that get them new and have a maintanance folder the size of a phone book

I'm surprised that the 3RZ has only been mentioned a few times as well. Maybe its that its newer and not gotten the exposure to high mileage that the 22r(e) has gotten.
I recently rebuilt my '98 3RZ at 223K. I blew a head gasket and after limping it home over 200 miles I had burned a few valves and figured since I was redoing the top end I might as well redo the bottom end also.
Everything on the engine was original except plugs. I used the truck for over 8 years to deliver newspapers, so the engine hours were much higher than would normally correspond to the mileage. I also ran it really hard on dirt/gravel roads all over the northwest.
Maybe they are not as popular since they compete with the V series motors, where the 22r only competed with the 3.0L, which had head gasket issues.

You're kidding right... Worst motor ever.
The old Toyota 4.2 I6 out of the FJ40's (having a brain fart on the series of the motor) might be right there with the 22RE. The FJ45 Farm truck we had in Oz was looking at the downhill side of the 450K mountain, and it had had about as hard a life as any engine I can think of. We never had to fix a thing on it. It was loud, and rough, but it just would not die.
I agree about the 1300cc VW though, hands down one of the most relaible ever. I've also heard that Pinto motors were legendary and that you almost can't kill them. Any validity to that??
Cheers
Dave

I would have to vote for Briggs 5 hp. so maintainance free, you don't even need to change the oil! hahahahaha

Agreed, the 2.8 is junk

1986 Toyota celica -386,099 22re runs like a champ drips just a tiny bit of oil.
1988 toyota 4 runner -238,445 22re still pulls as hard as the day i got her.
1992 toyota pick up 2wd,22re 145,602 miles< cant complain
from experience 22re all the way!!!!!!!!!!!

for toyota i think its tie for the 2jz and uz series and then the 3rz and 5vzfe and finally the 22re. there no way the 22re is the best toyota motor
the best gm motor has to be a 454 and then the lsx, small blocks ,4.3 and 3.8 everything else is junk
i would never drive any ford or dodge unless its a manual diesel

Out of all the motors i've ever owned, the 22re was the most reliable and also had the most mileage. My 1.5L '95 Civic motor was great too, she kept purring. I've also only heard good about the 1UZ-FE.

Almost any SBC !!! 400s had a few issues, 4.3 v6, just a 350 missing two cyls., you could buy a set of forged pistons for a 350 for half the price of a 4.3 !!! and have two spares !!! 2.8l v6s had crankshaft issues !!! Chrysler slant 6s were right up there, so was the ford 300 i6, we pulled one down that had over 300,000 on it, original owner said it was a weak runner from the factory, we soon found out, seems ford had a bad day at the office, 400 v-8 bottom end pieces in the 300, maybe 6 to 1 compression ??? 390s are great !!! 20r has to be right there, old flat head 4s, how about a 21ru ??? They would scream, but they were sold as replacement motors for the 20r/22r, from Japan, they were only 1900ccs, not in between the 20r and the 22r !!! Had one in my 81 4x4, no bottom end but 7000 rpm was no problem !!! Mostly taking care of a motor is the biggest Problem !!!

i must say, after this last snowstorm, i just relized my briggs 12.5 is a pretty tough freakin engine. besides the 22r line of engines, ill vote for the 1990 chevy lt1 engine, old caprice had 300+.
now for an unreliabe engine, id hate to say it, but the 1998-2003 ford 4.6. intake manifolds crack like its going out of style, and the electornics (guage sending units, 02's, fuel pumps, I.A.C's, window switches etc. etc) are super touchy.
not to mention, the aod-e transmissions (wich are pretty much on every panther chassis (lincoln towncars, mercury merauders and grand marqui's)) blow out overdrive around every 120,000 if you dont do the shift kit.
but hey, this is the most reliable engine thread, not the most unreliable transmission/engine combo thread. so ill leave it at that!
