I recently bought an 86 pickup for pretty cheap. It was someone's mud/hunting buggy toy so I got a good deal. 68k original miles, engine and transmission and t case run great. Just really beat on.
Fast forward to now I've pretty much just spent every weekend working on. I've had it trail ready for a month but havent bothered going because A. Most of my trail riding friends rigs are broke B. I dont want to wheel alone and C. I can always find something else to do to it.
My girlfriend keeps saying I need to keep this truck as a project truck to work on, and buy and actually offroading rig. Hahaha
So I wanted to get some feedback on whether you enjoy wheeling more, or wrenching and modifying more. Looking forward to the responses!
I wrench because it is near impossible to get reliable, quality work done at any price. Certainly price does matter too and nobody works cheaper than me.
You can never have the confidence in your rig that you get when you know that you have followed all the best practices and used the best available parts.
I don't wheel much to show off. I want to go to remote places, and I often do go by myself. I'm getting too old to walk home.
I never let anybody else work on any of my machines.

Sure I'll bite on this...having fixed stuff for 40 or so years, driving it around would be my choice 80-90% off the time. I don't pound my rigs anymore off road cause my frame isn't going to take it, and its usually just crossing a ranchers section to get to a remote piece of river to fish. That said I try to do most of my fixing myself, but most of the lying on your back stuff has went over the fence a long time ago. I still like to 'tinker' under the hood.

I'd rather reshape a fender with a hammer and dolly than a rock/mountain-side.
I'm old like those other guys, so none that isn't teaching me something I don't know or has a tool I can't afford is touching my stuff if I have anything to say about it.
I can definitely relate to wrenching on my rig to avoid terrible mechanics messing with it. Lol I'm lucky to have some good friends who work for a reputable shop, so anything major that I cant do or specialty work they're down to help with.
I think personally wheeling is great with friends but I do enjoy modifying and working on my truck more than anything. The hours spent in the garage, the sense of pride in doing my own work and knowing I'd something fails that I can fix it. It's just more than half the fun of it.
I don't really wheel, but my Truck is a daily driver.
I personally really enjoying driving and working on the Truck!
Although sometimes emergency repairs are not fun when it is your only vehicle and you need it ASAP.
This is basically me too. I like working on my own rigs, but if there's a time crunch, or I feel like I don't have the skills I have a local small shop who was a toyota mechanic for years before opening his shop here. He also lets me stop by whenever and bug him with questions, advice, or help.
Wheeling is far more fun but wrenching is far more satisfying. That and I don't trust anyone else to work on my rides. Especially those of the two wheeled variety.
I wrench because it is near impossible to get reliable, quality work done at any price. Certainly price does matter too and nobody works cheaper than me.

The same.
I want to add we go to remote places with our truck, mild off road, once a year, it's our summer holiday vehicle.
