Mixing tire brands, is it ok?
I recently had a blowout of my right rear tire. I currently have Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 265/75/16. I want to make the transition to the Bridgestone Dueler A/T cause I can get a better deal through Costco than any local tire shop. The Goodyears are still in excellent condition and won't need to be replaced for quite sometime. Should I go Goodyear until I'm ready to change all 4 or is it ok to throw one Dueler into the mix. I'm a little confused at which direction to take. Thanks for your input.

You didn't get road hazard? Take them to a Goodyear dealer and see what kind of deal they can give you. I'm in the no vote camp when it comes to mixing brands - different handling in rain and cornering.

Once your tires have more than 5-10K miles on them (how many miles depends on how well the tires are wearing), then they should be replaced in pairs. Running tires of a different circumferance (even slight) can lead to handling issues in the front and driveline & tire wear in the rear. Switching brands for just one tire is a no-no for the same reason. You'd think that everybody's 265/75/15's would have the same measurements until you actually go into a tire shop with a tape measure. Also, I wouldn't go with a different tread pattern on only one wheel - handling in the rain, snow, dirt, etc. can get funky when one tire behaves differently from the rest.
Oh, and for $5 or $10 per tire, a road-hazzard warranty is well worth it.

when i bought my truck six years ago it had 3 different tires: a Le Mans AT (huge 31x10.50r15), a goodyear rts (265/75/15), and two dean tire co. trailcat lt's (wimpy 31x10.50r15). the mis-match pair was on the front and it still handled fine.
then one of the factory alloys broke (my bad) so i bought four new ones and put michelin ltx's on.
i gave the "crap" to my dad, he found a single wheel on ebay and is running the set to this day on his 89 toy pickup with no problems.

I bought the truck in January and I'm waiting for the prev. owner to get back to me on the purchase details. I didn't think it would be a good idea but this is my first truck and I'm still wet behind the ears. Thanks for the responses, it really helped.

It is not a good idea, but in reality, you will be just fine. While it is true that it may increase wear, but it is nothing to be concerned with. You can probably get 500,000 miles out of a toyota axle. So what if you shorten the life a few thousand miles. I wouldn't suggest mixing tires, but there is no need for concern. Do what works best for you.

I think you should be ok. If you were going to put an M/T on there, it would be another story.
I always replace mine in 4's if I am changing the tire brand. When I blew out a tire on my Celica, my other three were still new. But since the previous owner put the wrong size on, I bought 4 tires. Discount tire bought back my old tires (gave me $40 credit). It isn't much but it was a weird size. Check and see if they will buy the other 3.

My brother-in-law has an 88 4Runner with BFG 32x10.5 A/T's on the front and BFG 32x10.5 M/T's on the rear. I'd like to get these tires from him. Will they be ok to run like that?

If you MUST mix brands, then it's best to maintain the same style tire on each axle. Although dry handling differences aren't as notable, wet/slick conditions with different tires on the same axle may cause detrimental handling.

Ive got diffrent flavors on both of mine (now)
mine are in pairs, front and rear. Ive had no problems in the year ive owned the 4r other than when i got it only 1 tire had wheel weights on it, and when i had them ballanced (after the new shocks went on) one of the no weight wheels picked up like almost and ounce of weight.

First... as a side note, this thread is old. I just thought my question might be best placed here, since it falls along somewhat the same lines as the original question.
So, let me get this straight. As Rick F. said:
The tires I'm getting are all the same size. I'll have All-Terrains on the front and Mud-Terrains on the rear. Same style on each axle. So I should be ok then, right? Btw, I plan on getting new tires before I ever have to rotate these.

I use to run different one brand on the front axle and another brand on the back and never had any problems at all. I think as long as you don't have a spool or locker in back and don't drive in 4HI on the pavement you should be fine.
