Legal, no?

Only place I figured I could realistically mount my back up lights:

Anywhere else I didn't like, not on top or bottom of the bumper, and not on the hard top for obvious reasons. So long as I keep them off while not in reverse/driving down the road I should be fine right? Unless the po-po's would complain about them being so close to the licence plate or something...

heres how I had mine installed on my 4runner and then I had the last one from the set on the bottom of my bumper for when I had the top off.

you should be fine with them there just make sure the screws do not scratch the rear window I had a pair of replacement bolts for the plate that where about a 1/4 inch longer and they scraped the crap out of the window the first time I lowered it.

why would a cop hassle someone about lights mounted on their rig? (lights not turned on)

Light regulations vary by state. I know some places have a limit of how many total lights can be exposed on a street legal vehicle and also things like off-road lights must be covered when the vehicle is driven on the road. Not sure what the regs are on rearward facing lights. Might check your state's vehicle code (usually available on-line) to see what the rules are.

For the auxiliary backup lights, one option is to wire them thru a 3-way switch such that they can be turned off, or made to come on automatically (in reverse) or turned on manually, like for setting up camp in the dark. If you leave them off while on the road, should not be an issue. After all tow trucks and other work trucks often have rearward facing tractor lights.

Towtrucks and such are exempt from legalities surrounding this, mostly b/c we use them to recover cars at night.

FWIW: The towtruck we have I installed so many lights it is BRIGHT all the way around for those night recoveries and night long hauls.

I run aux reverse lights. They work WAY better then the stockers, and I can use them as spot lights.

In my area, they are considered illegal. Any aux light must be covered with an opaque cover. MAX 2 reverse lights.

But its VERY loosly enforced. Im sure police have better things to worry about. Hell, most don't even know the law exsists.

That's the same place I have mine mounted. I put them on a switch so I could turn them on/off anytime. I've never been pulled over for them either, but i also live in KY!

Don't know about Ga, but in AL those would be illegal since they are blue. I have seen alot of the hispanics on the side of the road here with cops and they'll have blue LED's and crap underneath their cars.

Add some red lights, flick them on and off quickly and you'll fool the cops into think you're one of them. Trust me.

you'll be fine. I'm not sure if it's a law or not here but I had some on my fist 4runner and I'm about to put some on my current 4runner. My buddy has his bolted to his tool box on his dodge ram. never had a problem.

Wow, lotsa info! I'll try and get all the answers in.

I'm not sure what color they are, I'm pretty sure they will be white but that was taken with a flash and the lights have that wierd color changing film on them. Cheapest set I could find that fit my measurements. I just mounted them with screws going through the plastic so I didn't have to drill into the tailgate.
I wasn't really worried about extra backup lights in general, I had two tracor lights mounted on top of the roll bar in my old pickup. I didn't know if they would raise a stink about them being so close to the tag.
I'll have to check into how a 3 way switch is wired up, I'll check your site here shortly. But now I'm motivated to try and wire them up, so here I go!

Oh, and I'm glad someone likes the sticker got it at the indian festival a while back, not sure what it means or if it even has a meaning, but I wanted to be a little different. (not quite the skull and crossbones, but the same principal)

Took less time that I thought it would. They do look white, I just don't know if they'll be bright enough for me. I'll post pics when it gets dark.

...poor excuses for lights...

May be good for rock lights but just not bright enough for me. Now I gotta figure out how to cram some tractor lights in there. They are kinda bright but more of a spot light than anything. I need floods so I can see on the side as well.
