Ok, so I've never bothered to put in a security system in my truck, because I don't want to spend any money on it, Taco's aren't a big threat, and they really don't work that well. However, with some recent thefts at work, I was thinking of a cheaper solution. I swear I've seen those kits where all it is a big blinking red led light that you can hook up for about $20 or so. Anybody seen this?

Again, I don't want an alarm system, because 90% of the time, nobody cares if it's going off and the other 10%, it's a false alarm. Thanks for any input.

Edit: ok, I found one on Amazon, and found a write up, too. Amazon's is just a box with LEDs. Kind of lame. I am going to try out the write up.

 

All you need to do is go to Radio Shack and and get a blinking LED and the correct size resistor...I think around 400 Ohms, but ask the store guys to be sure. Clip an alligator or some other clip onto the long LED lead (heat sink) between the LED and the solder joint and solder the LED and resistor leads together. Heat sink the small lead and solder a wire to it, and solder another wire to the end of the resistor (heat sink not required) and hook it up to 12V power. If you wanted to get fancy you could get a normally closed relay hooked up to a power source when the key is on and the LED would only blink when the key is off. Electrical tape or heat sink would also be a good thing to use to cover the bare metal parts of your new security system. I've seen people drill a small hole and wedge the LED into it, and some have siliconed it in. Good luck and have fun.

And if you wanted to get extra fancy you can get a Toyota security punch out that were common on 96-98 4Runners.

Blinky light=I have a security system because i have something worth stealing. Really, don't advertise,and if they want it, a litle red light isn't going to slow them down a bit. May make em laugh though!

Hey but it's your time and money

 

I bought mine (95) runner and it came with a blinking LED that says TOyota on it. I'm not sure if this is a real alarm or a fake. It's never made alarm noises. Was this just a deterant or do I have an alarm that I don't know how to use?
