I broke my engine.

Hello everyone.

I need some help.

I own a V6 4runner with a 3vz-e engine. it was running fine. but has an oil leak, I sprayed the really oil covered spots with degreeser covered my dizzy cap with plastic and pressure washed the engine.

i let it dry and it wouldnt start. it was cranking fast but wouldnt fire up.

I checked the leads and plugs.
then i checked for spark at the coil /w igniter and i wasnt getting spark. I unpluged the coild and the igniter leads and found a few drops of water had gotten inside the igniter plug.

I unbolted coil and igniter and cleaned/dried them.

after reconnecting it all, it still had the same issue,

I got the service manual and multimeter out to check volts and resistance
(i wish i knew how to use a multimeter.) all i was sure of is i got 12.53 volts to the coil lead.

still no spark.

I am lost, but in all honesty I dont have much of an idea.

Things i have noticed.

there is a loose connection, on top of the air box where a plug runs into a silver plate(ECM i think),it hums with ACC on unless i bump it then it stops humming.

there is also a connection just under the headers on the drivers side, that sits hard up on the engine(looks like a black plug with a gray wire running to it and its snapped off.

I hope some one can help, i just wannted to rule other things out before buying a new coil and igniter,or even rule one out to save the cost of both...

ANY help will be helpful, if anymore info or some pics will help pls let me know and i will get it.

Thanks

You mentioned that it "spins over fast" and "no spark."

Distributor malfunction....?

Timing belt failure...?

-Compression check

-Remove distributor cap and "crank" engine.
-Verify operation of the distributor.(Does the distributor rotor turn?)
-If it doesn't turn you have found your problem.

-Check timing components.

Cleaning the engine....

-Multiple electronic components contaminated...?

Check ignition coil resistance...?

Hey just noticed my battery indicater is black, ment to be green but its still cranking. Could a battery still crank the engine but not spark the plugs?

It may seem like a dumb question cause i tested the battery for volts and got a 12.6v reading so i skipped checking it further

thanks Passive

The runner ran fine before the hose down?
Then it's gotta be some water/moisture in somewhere

Did you try to force start the engine "VIA" pressing and depressing the throttle while cranking...?

So i have checked the distrib. cap and charged the battery, still no spark at coil.

If i use my multimeter to test coil and igniter, how would i set the OHMs mine goes from 200-200k

I tried the lowest OHMs setting for resistance, at 200 i could not get a reading from the +positive pin to the ignition lead hole

and same setting not all of the pins on the igniter would register a reading..

just anything to make sure it is one of the two or both.

Thanks for all the continued help!

Thank you to every one that offered knowlage, after tinkering with it for 3 days, it ended up being the air flow meter. 1x broken solder. Quick job easy fix. So much drama for one tiny pin...

Again thank you to every one for helping, I am glad i dont have to scrap my camping trip

Keep up the good work guys.

Passive.

I know nothing about the 3vz-e but I did have a very similar experience with a 22re couple years ago. It ended up being the coil
