I have no clue what difference you'd see. I'm no math whiz #1 & #2 I have no idea what ratio you're running now. The higher the gear ratio number the less gas mileage you'll get because the engine will have to run more RPM to get the same speed as the lower numbered gears.
For instance I had an old Z-28 that had 2.73 gears in the rear, it'd cruise at 160mph & get 17mpg doing it; I had it switched to 4.11's & I could barely hit 120mph but I got there a lot quicker! My fuel consumption reflected the gear change as well & I started getting like 12mpg....remember though; I was a 16 year old with lotsa females around to impress so the toes on my right foot smelled like gasoline from sticking into the carb all the time.

thank you... i think (dont take my word for it) i have 3.73's im not real sure about it tho and i was looking in a toyota mag and it said that for a dd with 33's you should run like a 3.91, so thats what im gonna look in to. also where can i find gears for a good price.

If you go to 3.91's the gas mileage will decrease, you know that right? Also, that small of a gear ratio change (3.73 to 3.91) isn't worth the money it's going to cost you to have it done imo Especially when you add in the worse fuel economy over the lifetime of the truck & the rising (daily) gas prices....the mileage decrease will likely be slight per gallon with that tiny ratio change but it adds up over time.

with the minimal change he's talking about, I don't think it'll matter much at all; if your screaming around on the interstate at 5 grand trying to keep up with traffic your going to get sucky gas mileage & that's a fact of life, if you keep the vehicle in a normal rpm range of course it won't change, but your driving speeds will.

With the right gears, fuel economy goes up because the engine isn't lugging around below the power band trying to turn bigger meats. I was getting 14mpg maybe with my '85 on 33's with 3.90 gears, swapped to the correct 4.88 gearing and I get 17-17.5 mpg. More RPM isn't what kills your mileage, not running the correct RPM range does.

It's really simple, what trikekid said means that if your tire size is lugging the engine it'll cause bad mileage & that's true, but who lugs around because of tire size? In reality your going to run the engine where it's most responsive by adjusting your right foot on the gas pedal. You have other issues than gearing I'd almost guarantee you. I'd do a full tune up, new dist. cap, rotor, quality plugs, a new air filter & double check the timing. Unplug the battery for a while to reset the computer & then average out your mileage on the highway & interstate. If it's STILL bad (12mpg is really bad) I'd go straight to the O2 sensor & check it out; a bad O2 sensor can cause mileage like that.

i have the k&n air filter,so i just got done cleaning it, and i unpluged the bat. the plugs and wires have prob 7 or 8000 mi on them so im not gonna change them just yet. and i have the coil packs (which are new)so theres not much i can do with them but ill see what this does for me and let yall know

4.88.
I ran 4.88's for almost a year on 28's. The RPMs were higher on the highway, but i was still getting 21 mpg.
On that motor, you'll probably be pretty close to stock RPMs on the 4.88's. You'll be just a hair higher, but it will help on the hills.
When I went to 33's, it jumped to 23.
You are undergeared for the tires you are running. That will absolutely kill your mileage.
Guys running the 3.4 are running 4.88's on 33's, and getting 19-20.
Do a tune up, regear, and if you are still running poorly, post up!
