Gear Oil vs. "Hypoid" Gear Oil
I'm prepping and studying to do the 60K tune up myself (save the timing belt) and I see that Toyota calls for gear oil in some situation and "hypoid" gear oil in others.
Can anyone clue me in to the difference? I'm planning on switching to Amsoil synthetic and I don't see anything from Amsoil that says 'hypoid.'
My guess is that the synthetics will take care of any of the differential and/or transfer case fluid requirments.
Thanks Folks

Hypoid gear oil is generally GL-5, for use in the differentials:

You can usually use GL-5 in all the gear boxes, but GL-4 will work better in the transmission. It is not so much the GL-5 is "better" than GL-4 oil, they are just designed for different applications.
