Fires in Southern California!

Yea, I guess it's really bad this year. My parents had to evacuate last night from North county San Diego. Total bummer. What makes these things worse is not knowing if your home's ok. Chances are, if your home gets hit, insurance won't pay!

why do you say that? obviously you cant call and change your coverage when a fire is near, but why wouldnt they pay if your house burned down?

well, i know someone that paid their bill like 2 days late...
the fire was near their house, so they called to make sure..
the insurance company got the bill, but the DAY after the bill was due, the CANCELLED their coverage... (obviously, they knew the fire was near their house...) but i think they are okay now.

My parents got to go back home yesterday. As far as the insurnace, it's just like Katrina, when there's mass devastation, the insurance companies can't pay back everyone for the damage, there's just not enough money. Most just say it's an act of god "not covered". They have ways of getting out of it. I don't know what the actual numbers are, but most of the loss in Katrina was not covered by insurance even if you had flood insurance. The fires a few years ago in San Diego "Scripps Ranch area" weren't either. It really sucks but thats just the way it is. Weather it's quakes, fires ,or floods. Chances are your screwed when it comes to insurance coverage.

I guess if you burn your house down, it may be covered. Or if a pipe bursts and floods you lower level, it may be covered. Drive your Toyota through the front window because of to much beer....... Uh wait , that may not be covered?? LOL

sorry but you guys are just wrong. state farm paid out billions of dollars, and still didnt lose money that year. flood is handled by FEMA. FEMA is a government program. insurance companies service FEMA policies, but we arent the ones in charge of it. flooding is excluded, hence the flood policy. before it was FEMA regulated, insurance companies charged about half the price the government does now. so i just have to disagree with you guys. i know that insurance companies have a bad name, but you are being misled. in colorado fire is one of the named perils of coverage. if your house burns down from a wildfire, its covered. as far as cancelling someone the day after the premium is due, thats also illegal in colorado. since insurance varies in every state, i cant speak on behalf of cali's laws, but there is a grace period and it is a state law in colorado to have the grace period. that way with payment coverage is reinstated, up to 30 days after the due date whether there is a fire near or not. by the way, katrina claims are still ongoing, and since people lawyer up, it makes it harder for insurance companies to settle claims.
