ELocker gear Paint mark advise

I have setup my E locker with a set of new TG 529 gears v6 and all new bearings, BL set to @.080 and pinion preload set, this is with a pinion shim of .090 and this is about as big as I can go or the pinion will hit the carrier. it looks shallow but I am no expert, hopefully ZUK will check in with some advice. I also tried with the stock shim of .080 and still looked shallow and it looks to by at the end of the pinion instead of along the middle, here are a few pictures. please Help.

now here is the first set with .080 pinion shim

I did some more changes today, mostly looking at zuk,s web site and trying to reshim based on some of his installs. I think its getting better but hope that someone else will chime in that knows gear installs. this is the last one I did for today and its with a .044 shim and I think it needs to go less, may try .030 and then go from there.
Drive

coast

here is the pinion

ok.....take 3 . I re-read and see you have the V6 e-locker....you have a V6 ring and pinion...it's too deep even with 080 shim.....the issue probably is related to the inner race. Check to make sure it's pressed on all the way.

You can try it with no shim at all and I bet it's close....but that just tells us there's a reason why zero works...and you have to find it. ....inner race may not be seating down all the way due to a dinged up surface. Inspect contact surface that the race seats up against.

Well Zuk you were right on, the large pinion race was not seated all the way down. I havent set it back up yet. what pinion shim should I start with, the shim that was in it was the .080 shim I started with. Thanks for the help.

That's very close....somewhat deep. Some would say ok to leave there...I think I might say that. But if you want it dead on then go with 076

From: Bryan Tx,
Congrats on the gear install! I really need to check out ZUK's site because setting up a R&P is the only thing on my truck that I am afraid to do myself. The 5.29's in my truck I bought used, but they where set up by ZUK and the PO gave me pics of the paint marks and yours look pretty close.

Thats cool, I probably used those as a reference to do mine. Its really not that bad, just have to have lots of patients, and a press. I still need to fab a tool to hold the pinion for that torque down and a tool to torque the carrier caps. probably next week, just too much going on this week.

ok I pulled the pinion and measured the shim again and it was actually closer to 80 so I measured and remeasured till i got a 078 shim and went with that and below are the paint marks, this is where it will stay. I made some tools to tighten the side carrier bearing caps tightend both till i got the .007 backlash then i tightened each one little by little till they were tight, put the torque wrench on them with 150lbs and good to go, also did the pinion 150lbs with red loctite and hit in the indent. ready to paint and install. here are a few pics.

not the preetiest but they work!!!

drive side pics

coast side pics

Pinion pics

let me know what you think!!!! ZUK??

Patterns look aok to me. Yep, your tools don't look pretty but who said they have to....long as they do the job. I have a feeling your friends will be borrowing your tools in the near future anyways
ZUK

HA!....you should datecode those tools...20 years from now you might still have them and it would be fun to reminisce about how that tool came in so handy many times....
