Downey Offroad Out of Business?

Jim still has inventory...but he sounds retired...

He's selling stuff on ebay....he's pretty busy being retired from the vibe i get. I found him by searching for Downey header's for my 1993 3.0 v6 4runner. I am going to buy a new set from him with ypipe and maybe some "new" manual hubs.
I have only inquired about the parts for my 2nd gen 4runner. most of his prices were pretty good, he wanted a butload for the Intake pipe and filter, i said, no way.

That's a torque failure, that's why it's so clean. did you have this thing over torqued to give lift in the front end? My college would have drooled over this pic when i had Mechanics of Materials.

Looks a lot like this one:

No, the torsion bars where not cranked up all the way for additional lift. It had another 2" to go before being maxed out. I had these bars on the truck for a number of years before the failure occurred. I replaced the Downey torsion bars with a set of Sway-a-way and I must say, the quality on the sway-a-way is quite poor. It has welded splines ends (while the Downey's were one piece with machined splines) and it was poorly welded on.

Dang how loud was it when it snapped? that sucks, good to know about the sway-aways. Brhesson is right about the torque failure. I remember this too in the materials class we had in nuclear school in the Navy.

I didn't hear anything. Basically, I was going to take the truck out in the middle of the night and drove about 20' and then I noticed something was rubbing on the front tires. I got out and had a look and the truck was slammed to the ground and the tires where rubbing the inter fender liner.

If your still looking for Downey Parts, you can find them on ebay. Jim's new name is Tojo man. He has quite a bit of inventory from early cruisers to new tacoma's.
Hope that helps. I have bought some parts from him and have been very happy. I bought mega travel ball joints, rear ifs bracket, 2" HD springs for my 94 4runner.

I bought a KN air filter and header from them for my 85 4runner quite a few years ago. Just took it to get smogged, here in California, and was told I need stickers for each that say "50 state approved". Where would I find that ?

Give KN a call..they might mail you a sticker.
