Don't forget a jack stand! They are pretty cheap, but great insurance for safety!

As to your problem - With the amount of fluid you have, my first guess would be the axle seal. There is definitely enough there to just get a smear on your fingertip, then give it a sniff. Gear oil has a very distinct (and nasty) odor to it, and you will be able to smell it, even with just a little on your finger.

Brake fluid will give you the immediate feeling of drying your skin when you touch it.

Do that simple test (you don't even have to jack it up), then start making your plans from there.

Probably gear oil, if all that was brake fluid your reservoir would be about empty by now and you'd be stopping very slowly.

i would vote for it being a bad seal because ive been in the same position. but regardless of what it is your going to have to put on new shoes becuase they have been soaking in that oil. be prepared to thouroughly (sp*) clean out the inside of that drum so your braking wont be altered.

While you are trouble shooting your problem, (touching, licking, smelling) I had the same issue once. Turned out to be from a dog taking a leak on my wheel....

...and yeah, most likely an axle seal.

Check your brake fluid level, is it low? Do the smell check. Is your brake pedal spongy? My truck was that bad when my wheel cylinder went. Good luck. O yea, make your way down to sears and get a floor jack and a jack stand set

If it was gear oil you should be able to smell it just getting around 20 ft of your truck......

Yea i smelt it, it smells like hydroil oil. (closest thing i could think of) but i opened the diff today, and oil started coming out.. and with a closer look, it has bubbles in it. dont know if thats good or bad. the brake fluid is fine. its at where i filled it last.
