Diff and locker questions.

Im making my x-mas/birthday list, and i have some questions about gearing and an aussie locker.

First off i have a 1990 2 door 4runner 22re 5spd.

1. I need to know which aussie locker i would need for the rear.
2. Where is a good place to get 5.29 gears, and which ones do i need to get.(i will be running 33s soon, hopefully tomorrow)

Thanks for any help, im just not sure which differential i have and how many splines and so on. There is so much false information out there from people who dont know what they are talking about, so i decided i better ask the experts

Yeah i was trying to decide between the two, wouldnt 5.29s work better for offroad though?

Well maybe not because it would cause it to rev higher easier right? like spinning your tires on wet pavment.

Yes, either 4.88s or 5.29s will work with 33s. Offroad, you'll find 5.29s a little better since you get a slightly lower (slower) crawl ratio. On the road, 5.29s will rev higher, so if you do a lot of 70+ driving, 4.88s might be nicer. I've run both and prefer the 4.88s on the road, keeps the engine revs down to more comfortable levels on long drives. You do down shift a little more, but it seems to be a good tradeoff.

I'm 4:88 with 33" I like the streetability and offroadability. I'd argue that if offroading was your major concern youd be better off with 4:70 t-case gears and a locker. 4:10's will turn 33's, this was how my truck was when I got it. It just wasn't as nice as 4:88.

There's some guys on here running 5:29 on 31's, they like it. Do you know anyone with the setup you are thinking about? test drive their ride after you put the 33's on to compare.

For street tires I run 5.29 and 32s. 65mph runs about 3300rpm and the torque is nice with good mileage. 70mph revs it higher than I like for long distance and mileage suffers. However 70mph with 4.10 and 31s my mileage also suffered which I think is due to the lift.

Yeah maybe 4.88s would be a better choice.
Is there any downfalls to the transfer case gears?

Oh, and im pretty sure i have 4.56 gearing already, i did some research a few weeks ago and thats what i found on a guys website. But like i said, there could be quite a bit of false information out there.

T-case gears are somewhat more expensive and only come into play in low range. They do give you a lower low range than you would see with axle gears alone.

Lower crawl ratio in low range:
So lower gear range means lower speed for a given RPM or at a given speed, higher RPMs and less load on the engine.

4.70 gears can run in the $400-500 range plus you need to pull the t-case and install them:

If it is a stock 4-cyl., gear driven case, then yes, 21-spline is it.

The down side to low t-case gears is that: great for obsticles but slow between them when 4hi is too hi and 4:70 low is too slow.

I've run all the trails at Evans creek off the Carbonado with them and had no major issues. Just a little slow in some section. The nice thing is that there's no additional modifications to make.

Another option is stock gear dual t-case. It would give many more gear option but require alot of additional modifications. And cost quite a bit more.

if i was you, i wouldnt bother regearing since already have 4.56s. my old p/u had 4.10s and 33x12.50s, it was a littel slow but i didnt mind the setup. but if you plan on goin 35s or bigger, then yes i would regear but if 33 is the biggest your goin,IMO 4.88s would be a waste of money. instead of gettin the 4.88s and aussie for christmas, get an aussie, and maybe some sliders and a front and back bumper from marlin

DAMN! I put the wheels on today and they looked sooo fricken awesome! But the back spacing made the wheels stick out to far and i couldnt even back out of the shop.
My boss can get me a set of 31" bfg allterrains for about $550. And i hope to find a good deal on some better wheels on craigslist.

And im also still in need of which locker to get.

Aw man i wish i could get that much stuff for my birthday and christmas!
Theres no way in hell my parents would get that much stuff, if anything for my 4runner. I hope to get one of 3 things. Manual hubs. T-Case mount/skidplate. Or an aussie locker.

I'm surprised no one has asked this yet, but what exactly are you/ do you want to do with your rig? How often will you be on the trails and what kind of trails?
