Clutch Engagement - What's normal?
I have a 1994 4WD Pickup that I recently purchased. It's got 178K miles. The previous owner did not replace the clutch and he didn't know if the original owner had.
When shifting you barely have to step on the pedal. When letting out the pedal the engagement point is all the way at the end of the pedal. We have an old Toyota Pickup at work that is the same way so I'm wondering if this is normal for Toyota's. I drove a Honda before I got this truck; it was just the opposite.
Is there a "normal" feel for Toyota clutches or does it just depend on the clutch brand, pedal adjustment, and wear?

I think that it really all depends on how worn it is and whether or not its an OE clutch or aftermarket. I know that mine is the same clutch it rolled off the lot with. I notice that mine will change with the weather. Sometimes it doesnt really take anything for it to engage, and other times it gets to be a bit stiff. For the most part, though, mine does the same thing as yours does. I'm starting to think that its just the OEM toyota clutch, thou. My buddy has a centerforce Dual Friction clutch in his 1993 4Runner and it doesn't do that. BTW, centerforce dual friction clutches are AWESOME. Just an opinion if your ever need to buy a new one, theyre worth the money.

Hmmm - your experience is exactly opposite of mine:
Toyota - engagement at the bottom of the stroke, slack is at the top
Honda - slack at the bottom, engage at the top
It's always funny when I drive a Honda as the engine over revs as I let the clutch pedal out until it engages.

Here's the section of the FSM that explains how to adjust it

Checked the clutch pedal yesterday. It's within specs according to the FSM. The clutch isn't slipping and there are no other signs that would lead me to believe it's going out. No sense in pulling the transmission out to check for sure, so I won't worry about it and keep driving

I just did a Marlin clutch on my rig a month or so ago and the clutch now grabs right off the floor. Kind of annoying, and it takes a few shifts to readjust to the higher clutch in my Mustang, but it actually works well.

Mine is the same way, but I'm in the same boat. As far as I know it has 200k on the origional clutch. It seems to start to grab near the floor, but doesn't seem to fully engage until it's up near the top.
Mine is a 89 Pickup 4x4 with a 22RE 5-sp
I think I'll just run it for now, and maybe put a new clutch in next summer. It doesn't seem to be slipping or anything, so I think it's ok for now.
