Bondo body repair question??? (PICS)

Hello,

Before I bought my 4runner, the previous owner mentioned a fender bender that got repaired on the passenger rear quarter.

The other day I noticed a crack in the body. I am gusseng they just bondoed over the dent and now it has cracked. I want to seal it with something before water gets in there and freezes.

What do you recomend to repair bondo? super glue? silicone?

Thanks!

bondo

I worked at a body shop for about 5 years before I joined the millitary and the bondo should never crack. If the shop doesn't replace the body panel they just pull the dent out and use a thin layer of bondo. Some shady body shops just fill the dent with bondo and call it a day and it ends up being an inch thick. You could put some bondo in there just to seal it off so water won't get back there and rust it out but it will probablly keep cracking. My opinion is to go to a reputable body shop and have them knock all the bondo off and pull the dent out and fix it right.

Thanks, I was worried about that. The previous owner had all the paperwork except from the "fender bender".

From looking at the crack , I cant tell how thick the Bondo is but it defiantly is not just a thin layer.

Thanks for re-using an old thread. Wow, looks like a fair amount of damage. Without being there to look at it I'll give you body work basics.

1. If its bent, fix it. If its kinked, replace it.
2. Your body filler should be no more than a 1/4" thick.
3. The metal work is (arguably) the most important part. Bad metal work and you'll never get it straight and looking good.

From what I can see, and taking a long shot, replacing that section of the rocker is likely your best bet. Depending on the vehicle you can probally get replacement rocker panels for it pretty cheap. Then measure, cut, sleeve, weld, grind, fill, prime, sand, paint, and apply corrosion protection to the inside. But since rock gaurd is easier to apply than paint and will make the final out come look better, do that to both sides instead of painting.

As for the door, try to find one at a wrecker. Or buy a new aftermarket door. I ordered mine through work (a bodyshop) and it came out to about $200 a door. Thats new, aftermarket, no rust, no dents, no old paint to fight with, no rock chips to deal with. Paint it, swap over the guts and your done.
