I got a dark green 1990 4runner (original toyota color) and I was wondering what ya'll think about black rims on an already dark 4runner? Also what kind? I got the six or seven wide spoked rims. I guess thats what I'd call it. I can't find pictures of my truck anywhere.

i've seen a pic of a green runner with black rims on it before and they looked great.. infact i just ordered black rims for my black truck!

 

i think it looks nice. i will be going with them on my well gold 4runner.lol

black rims are sweet

 

When I get some money I plan on buying a second set of Rims from the junkyard and painting them black...
(The reason I say second set is because I want to put a more beefier for off-raoding and keep teh otherser for DD and better gas mileage...)

I have a darker color 4Runner and I think Black Rims look great on any rig IMHO...

 

I Think I'm doing black rims then. Should I use Gloss or something flatter like a satin or flat paint? Also.. Can I use a paint stripper or sand blaster to remove the paint/rust from my rims?

 

my balck rims look cool. except for the yellow stripe that i am painting black this weekend

 

i have a black 93 4runner with black rims and i get compliments sometimes. ive been noticing alot more vehicles, mostly toyota tacos and 4runners, with black rims lately around my area.

Gloss is a little more of a bling but not really...
And I think flat or satin just looks dirty to me...

I think someone here used paint stripper or maybe even brake cleaner or something of that nature...

 

Oven cleaner will strip it right off..

I rather have black rims, I like the chrome/shiny effect but you have to clean them ALOT. Black, ok maybe wipe them down when yiou actually notice the brake dust i so bad you can notice your finger prints on them.

Oh a good trick for cleaning rims, dilute some simple green, spraya nd let sit for a few mins and rise and wipe right off. THen coat with car wax to ensure dirt doesnt stick.

 

clean? CLEAN? no way, i want these things covered in mud.

A little brake dust won't even show up on mud.

 

There are a couple of write-ups here that would show up in a search...

Personally, my alloy rims were pretty nicked up, so I went after them with a 4" coarse wire brush in a drill motor. I spent about 30 minutes per wheel getting the grease off and smoothing out the nicks. Then a coat of Rust-oleum primer (DO NOT SKIP THE PRIMER!) and two coats of Rust-oleum flat black. They've held up VERY well.

 

These are worth the money...i think

awesome thread. My rims are aluminum, they can still be painted right? I'm sick of spending time polishing them. Plus, black just looks awesome. Is it necessary to take the tires off to paint them, or can I just masking tape around the tire? I'm on 'vacation' right now, but when I get back I wouldn't mind making my rims black since the truck sees more mud than it does car washes. my 4runner's rims were painted flat black by the last owner and I have to say it looks awesome -- even though it's just flat black.
