285/75/R16 BFG MT's on a 96 4Runner

Got my new shoes today!

285/75/R16 BFG MTs on factory 16x7 rims.

The front end is rubbing on the frame at full-lock, but fear not! 1.25" Marlin spacers will be here on Thursday! Given the tread wear on the old tires, and the larger size of these, I gained about 1.5" of ground clearance.

Before, 265/75/R16 Avon MT SXT: (click for larger pics)

After, 285/75/R16 BFG MT: (click for larger pics)

Got 'em from TireRack.com for $871.40 including delivery to a local installer (Omni Brake & Alignment in Kirkland, WA). Add $100 for mounting, balancing and installation.

EXCELLENT service from TireRack and Omni. WAY WAY recommended!

Kudos to John (AH64ID) and Andy (bamachem) for stopping me from making a too-expensive decision in trying to fit 305/70's in there.

They look nice and my 285 BFG KM's took me many places. But I have to ask, why not the 305's?

Oh, I actually had the 305's ordered and then I learned that there was no _safe_ way to get them to fit on the 7" rims. Plus, with an additional .75" of width, I would have had even more rubbing issues.

I'm "okay" with running a 1" wheel spacer, but I wasn't gonna run 2". So, that meant shopping for rims... I was under a hella time crunch since I had to try to beat the warehouse at TireRack from pulling the order and shipping it in order to switch to 285's.

So, I started looking for new rims... I found something that I liked, but the cost was insane. I was also offered a hella deal on Land Cruiser stock rims (which are 16x8) but when it came down to it... I felt myself thrashing to try to fix a questionable decision (305's) by throwing money at it. So, I pulled the plug, called TireRack and changed the order to 285's.

Considering the tires I came from, I'm happy. 2 years from now I'll be looking to do this _again_, and if I have my druthers, it'll probably be SAS'd.

Peh... it needs a wash, a wax and some dents pulled.

It's "The Olde Classic" - SAWs up front, OME springs and shocks in the rear. It's good for about 2.5".

Not enough... Stock 4.10's, but with the S/C and toys I'm not complaining about it. It's about the top end of where I'd be without regearing.

Nice. I love the way the 285's fill the wheel well. Just like Kyle above, I'd like to go this route in the future. Did you need to pound anything or was your lift enought for the 285's (or course after your spacers)?

The lift seems okay, but I haven't tried looking at things in full stuff. On the road it's fine. It'll be in the dirt this weekend so I'll know more then.

I _do_ expect a good amount of smacking in the front end.

A good smack with a 3lb sledge cleared my wheel wells out for my rubber... i was even able to cut the plastic liner and rescrew it down so it looked "stock" with the larger wheel well..

And one thing many people dont know is that 305's and 285's are the same height, just a little different, about .75", in width.. On these light trucks in many circumstances the narrower 285 is actually better, snow/rain/ice/pvmnt, dirt..

Get the tires balanced with the weights on the inside so it doesn't mess up the black look of the rims.

Looks good Mark, I too just made the jump to 285's. I rub on the frame as well and somewhere in the wheel well under heavy, fast compression. I'd love to know how the wheel spacers work out and the difference in stance. Keep us posted.

I'll post pics when I get 'em on, and then give a report after the Saturday ride!
