Just wondering what you guys carried each time out as far as hand tools. I have a general idea but just wondering if you guys with more experience could shed a little light from previous experiences. One of those thigs where you said man I am glad I had ________?

 

#1 item that no one else had that always 'saved the day"

valve steem tool.

basic hand tools,

full set of metric/sae wrenchs.
full set of 3/8 sockets mm/sae
various screwdrivers
BFH
crowbar
no less than 2 diffrent vise grips
test light
wirecutter/striper/crimper thingie
pocket knife/leatherman
flashlight
ductape.

thats about the basics

if you wheel with heeps, toss in a full set of torx as most of the jeep guys never have them

what i also carry
1/2 drive mm deep wells impact HF set 10-32mm
1/4 drive mm/sae set
3 jaw puller
pickle fork
grease gun

basic fluids, ATF, motor, gear, H20, wd40, antiseize

 

Some things I cary that snap-on left out is a hi-lift, few feet of wires, zip ties, tire plug kit, air compressor, exhaust hangers(the metal kind that comes in a role) and a few mic nuts and bolts.

 

some hard candy and little snacks in case you get lost or have to spend the night there.

 

well my highlift is always with me as well as my winch.

yes forgot the zip ties and plug kit. (i use CO2 for air)

and hose clamps

 

I carry ALL of the above plus
allen wrenches
cordless drill
air hose/chuck (after one 'wheeling trip where every gas station had frozen/cracked hose and had to drive quite a ways aired down)
a variety of crimp connectors
electrical tape
duct tape
2-1/8" socket (for hub)
JB Weld
Fuel tank repair
RTV (Ultra Copper)
stock jack, a hydraulic bottle jack, and high lift
a couple different length prybars
brass drift (especially if you have cone washers still)

Some say I carry too much.

Until they break something and I have the stuff to fix it.

 

Subscribe to a 4x4 magazine...they have this kinda stuff in there all the time...great articles on this topic in the current Petersens issue.

Soft sided bags - fit around and/or inside the spare.

 

Little tool box in the back and in the compartments in the back of my 4runner

 

in the box in the back of my truck... .soft side tool bag holds most of it weighing in at a anerexic 45 lbs or so.

 

i think you guys are forgetting the most important and versatile tool of them all -- the lowly crescent wrench! i carry 3 sizes that'll cover everything in my truck.

in the wheeler, i put together a tool kit that covers most of everything i should encounter...

3 crescent wrenches, small medium large
metric/SAE combo wrench set(3/8-1", 8mm-20mm), picked up on sale at HF for $10
54mm spindle socket, 22mm tie rod end socket, 30mm diff/t-case flange nut socket
3/8 metric/SAE sockets
3/8 ratchet and extensions
1/2" ratchet
ball peen hammer
brass drift, steel punches
standard and phillips screwdrivers in assorted sizes
5mm allen key(for weber air cleaner adapter screws and head studs)
assorted pliers
utility knife and spare blades
prybar
C-clamps
duct tape/gray RTV/jb weld stick


i need to get some recovery gear, but i might be getting rid of the truck so who knows...

 

If I'm going to do any hard wheelin, just think about what you are most likely to break. Axles, punctured tires, etc., and just make sure you have all the tools to take care of those things. That, and other basic tools that others have mentioned would be the minimum.
