5 speeds for those that work on trucks. Autos for those that have trucks work for them.

 

I have a 97 5-Speed 4Runner, anyone want to trade me for their auto.. Comprably equipped of course. Let me know..

 

I like the idea of being able to control every aspect of your vehicle. I figure that I know what conditions I'm driving in better than any computer out there. That's why I will always drive a manual.

 

Both my 85 and 87 are sticks. I feel much more connected to the vehicle driving a stick. I went out to look at new Runners last week. You cannot buy them in a manual!!! What's with that??

 

5-Speed for me. I'm just bummed that in 5 yrs. or so my next 4Runner probably won't be offered in stick...

 

is it just me or is this the longest thread on here? it was started almost a year ago...anyways i have an auto, (im only 16 and a half) and its cool and all, but all my friends drive sticks, and the other day my good friend (known each other forever) taught me to drive stick on his 04 tiburon v6 gt (hyudai or however you spell it) and even though the thing isnt as fast as my friends turbo eclipse, man was it fun!! he was a good teacher...no stallouts and i got able to go from 0-35 smoothly in about ten minutes...now im looking at getting a 4runner 5speed s/c w/ 4wd, im quite excited! a little bonus is my girlfriend thinks its really cool i know how to drive a stick...the only area im a little grey in is how you all go about driving the stick offroad? stay in first most of the time? and how do you shift into 4wd since its not push button...

the 4runner im looking at is a 99...ive heard the clutch is really long, especially compared to a sports car like the one i learned on, is this true?

 

Yeah, its always a good idea to at least learn to drive a stick even if you never own one. My wife still doesn't know how to drive a manual tranny (she drives a stick just fine) which was always a concern for me when we were way back in the woods before I bought an automatic. If I broke my leg or something she would not be able to drive us out of there, so yeah, its good to learn for sure.

The 4runner will have a bit of a longer throw on the clutch than a sports car which makes it easier to "ride" the clutch (which is bad) so be careful. To switch to 4WD there will be another smaller stick that you manually shift.

I drive a auto now (first one I have owned) and I have mixed opinions about the "auto vs. manual" thing. When offroading I look at it as that fact that an auto has an advantage because it is ALWAYS engaged and there are no worries about stalling while precariously balancing on a rock
Not to mention. . . a 3rd gen. 4runner manual tranny is hard as hell to find.

 

i test drove that 4runner...and its sweet. a lot easier to drive too. i might be getting it, pending sale of mine. i was asking like, exactly how you have to shift, i saw the shifter, and i read in the manual, just a little confusing...when exactly and how..from a roll, have to go a certain speed, clutch in...those kinda questions, the manual obviously explains how to do it, just a little confusing with out seeing it...hopefully ill have the 4runner soon though!

 

i bought my 5spd not knowing how to drive standard, lol... got a friend to test drive it. passed their approval, so i bought it and spent an hour or so the next day getting the habit of it. 5spd is def a bonus when you don't want your gf driving your vehicle (if they dont know how that is..)

 

I have an auto now. I had a 5-speed on my last truck and liked it much better than an auto.

 

I have an auto but I don't have a motor in my truck right now so it's not doing me a whole lotta good.

 

bob i know you asked for 'runners way back when... but i wanted to weigh in, too. nothing beats a manual. i can't imagine 4wd without it.

Rather then 4runners,and new tacomas,theres not many toyotas with automatics...

I have never seen an automatic toyota pickup.Im not saying they dont excist,but they must be very rare.

 

In 1st gear and 4low I creep along pretty slow. I like the auto but am considering the swap, we'll see after i get 4.56 in her.

i wouldnt drive anything but the 5speed, i love the manual
