Ive searched and not found my exact answer. LCE tech site is down.
We have a pre 85 22r block we want to rebuild and put the 85 head and efi on it. Will I run into problems? i.e engine mounts, timing cover issues, head bolts ect.....?

 

You shouldn't run into any problems. The overall design didn't change that much over the years so they're all the same. Are you pulling the EFI out of a donor truck?

 

No Kinda the other way around. We have a 22r from a donor and wanting to freshen up the 300k 85 efi. which is a DD as I type. The photo in my avatar

Being a DD we where hoping to have the block done and get a new rv head (epn) and drop it in. We got the 22r for free so thats the reason we thought it might be worth it.

 

The 22r and 22re blocks are the same. So you shouldn't run into any problems putting your head and intake on it. If your going with a new head, I recommend engbldr. They have a store on ebay and have a pretty good reputation around here.

 

Im in the same boat, just bought me a 84 toyota pickup after a week of driving engine has failed. I am either gonna rebuild or buy a new 22r, but I need to know everything about this engine. It has the efi installed, should I be aware of what year or when do the engines mounting change. SOMEBODY HELP ME!!

Depends what year block some 84`s could go either way the 83 year block won`t work without alot of machine work.

Not that you can`t do it different timing cover timing chain etc. The 83 still used the double row timing chain..

I have 3 of there engines in 83 Celica`s

Block height is different enough can`t remember which is which pistons well hit the valves or compression is so low it will run very poor.

Give Ted or his son at Engine builder a email they can set you straight.

84 and down, taller block, shorter heads

85+ shorter block, taller heads

Mixing year ranges will not work!!!

22r with 22re will work, just remember 22r needs fuel pump lobe on Camshaft or inline fuel pump rigged.

 

Yup you can't mix short blocks and long blocks. The older long blocks had dome pistons and dual row timing chains. The newer short blocks have flat top pistons and single timing chains.

 

The valve covers are a dead giveaway between the two heads

 

You can`t really go by the valve covers after all these engines are 20 plus years old.

I had a surprise found a 1983 engine in my 85 it had the newer style valve cover.
