1995 4runner tailgate replacement.

Hello! Hope someone can shed some light. Ive done some research and cant seem to find a difinitve answear maybe i wasnt searching the correct way.

i have a 1995 4runner with a damage tailagte. I was able to pick one up from a 1991 with a decenten spare tire mount on it

im seeing that a lot of 89-95 parts are interchangable on the 4runner but when researching tailgates im seeing that only 92- 95 are interchangeable not 89-95. Are there any modifications i can do. Or is it driect bolt on??

would love to be educated before i go tearing up my broken tailgate.

I think that you will find that the 95 doesn't have the internal structure for the spare tire mount ( I think that was only an option in 89-91). That includes parts in the tailgate for the latch as well as the body for the swing away mount. that is the reason for them not being interchangeable, but it should bolt in.

If you search around on Yotatech I remember seeing someone doing just that mod. I just can't remember who it was and I don't have time to search.

Red face

Pretty much it involves reinforcement of the areas where the swing out carrier mounts.

Other wise it will fall off given a few good bumps

Soo a a little late i know, lol i finally got around to putting on the new tailgate

So i put on a new to me tailgate(from a 1991 4runner). I picked up the tailgate with the harness being cut at the bottom where it goes into the rest of the plugs inside the tailgate.

During installation I decided that i didnt want to swap out the guts so i cut the harness on my 4runner (1995) that feeds into the tailgate.

From the harness bundle on my
1995 4runner 1995 4runner
there are 5 green cables 2 of those green ones have the red little markings on it not solid lines one wire is thick other is thinner.

the 1991 tailgate harness it only has one green cable with red markings on it not solid line.

I decided they all look the same so they might go together and work lol ..... not. After hooking everything up, everything worked fine. The window goes up and down.

Once I finished, It was dark outside and I decided to go on a drive and realized my dash lights and rear lights werent working. Actually all instrument lights are not working only stereo and clock.

Decided to put the tailgate window down and boom lights turn on. Let off the
window switch window switch
, lights go off. Put the window back up and lights are on again hahaha. So I'm a little lost. I believe the issue is this tailgate (1991) doesnt have license plate light or bracket. I didn't get it with the spare tire mount that goes on the 91. I need to figure out where i can wire my lights so my lights work when i turn them on. Instead of holding the rear tailgate button for them to turn on.

My break lights still work so does reverse and signals. Any help is appreciated.
would love to get this figured out by tonight. Will be having pics when i take harness apart.

Holy typos Batman!

I am willing to help but you are going to need to edit that post above. Spell check and paragraphs please. With out a proof reading, it is a little hard to follow..

short version, you need the wiring diagrams for donor and recipient. State clearly what you have and what you got. A few pictures will help also, we like Toyota pics lots!

I will get pictures and post them tomorrow.

I have a 1995 4runner had a damaged tailgate swapped it for a 1991 tailgate with a spare tire mount. I have not yet installed the swing out mount on the car.
